Summary
Rick and Morty season 7 has the opportunity to explore new storylines and characters with the departure of showrunner Justin Roiland.
Unresolved storylines from previous seasons, like Jerry's search for a steady job and Jessica's evolution into a time deity, need to be addressed. Fans eagerly await resolution for significant plot elements, including Morty's involvement in the Roy game, the destiny of Birdperson and Tammy's offspring, and the intricate relationship dynamics among Beth, Space Beth, and Jerry.
Rick and Morty season 7 is approaching, and there are several crucial developments that must occur in order to wrap up ongoing narratives. The immensely popular show, which has been greenlit for up to season 10, will be airing its first season without the involvement of showrunner Justin Roiland. In January 2023, Roiland faced legal trouble and was subsequently arrested for felony domestic battery and false imprisonment. Consequently, it was decided that Roiland would step away from the show, resulting in the recasting of his characters. Presently, it remains uncertain who will assume the roles of voicing both Rick and Morty, and whether it will be one or two actors.
With Roiland no longer in the picture and three additional seasons in the pipeline, Rick and Morty season 7 possesses a unique opportunity to start anew. Adult Swim has previously demonstrated the importance of continuity for the success of Rick and Morty, and numerous significant storylines can be revisited. Below, we delve into ten such storylines.
10 Rick & Morty Season 7 Finally Needs To Give Jerry A Job
Jerry has been unemployed for a long time and his few job experiences have been short-lived. His most successful stint was working for the Galactic Federation, but when Rick caused the economy to collapse and the Federation left Earth, Jerry's job prospects diminished. He also had a successful run in advertising and earned an award for his catchy marketing phrase "Hungry For Apples?". However, his success was short-lived when he was mistakenly taken by an alien ship along with Rick and Morty and ended up trapped inside a computer simulation.
Jerry's unemployment has put a strain on his marriage to Beth, and he is often seen as a weak man with no future, particularly by Rick. The constant repetition of Jerry's unfortunate experiences can become tiresome, so perhaps it's time for Jerry to find a job. In Season 6, Jerry took a stand against Rick and became more assertive, making it a good opportunity for his character development to finally hold a job without Rick ruining it.
9 Jessica Needs To Fulfill Her Time God Arc In Rick & Morty Season 7
In the opening of season 5, Mort Dinner Rick Andre, Jessica gets pulled into an alternate dimension where time moves much faster. Morty eventually locates her and discovers that she has been unconscious and trapped in a large crystal for millions of years, while also overseeing the dimension. After escaping and returning, Jessica goes on a philosophical rant before angrily leaving, proclaiming herself as a time god.
This event sets up a potential story arc for Jessica, similar to how Rick and Morty has previously transformed a teenage girl into a sci-fi demigod. Previously, Jessica had been a superficial teenager who focused on boys and disregarded Morty's advances. However, having witnessed countless lifetimes and experiencing it all, Jessica's entire perspective has undergone a dramatic shift, presenting the opportunity for her to become a completely new character. Her newfound experiences have the potential to create positive change or potentially lead to destruction.
8 Rick & Morty Season 7 Needs To Recover The Last Parts Of Morty From The Roy Game
In the midst of Morty's immersive life simulation game "Roy," an invasion of aliens disrupts the arcade they are visiting, trapping them inside the game. Rick takes it upon himself to play the game and discovers a world inhabited by non-playable characters (NPCs) engaged in a civil war, each containing a small fragment of Morty. Rick encounters Marta, a self-aware character, who agrees to assist him in persuading all the Mortys to exit the game. Ultimately, Marta sacrifices herself by remaining in the game and urging the collective to depart, allowing Rick and (most of) Morty to escape.
It is later revealed that Rick continues to fund the preservation of the machine, keeping the Marta-Morty component intact. Consequently, a part of Morty continues to exist within the video game, while simultaneously possessing her own character, backstory, and personal relationship with Rick. Over the years, Marta closely collaborates with Rick, gradually expanding the virtual world after their mutual decision to leave together. Throughout the in-game generations, Marta assumes the role of a mother and mourns the loss of her father. Despite her choice to remain for the benefit of Morty, it is logical for her to harbour resentment towards Rick.
7 Rick & Morty Season 7 Must Reveal What Happened To Birdperson & Tammy's Baby
Birdperson and Tammy, a friend of Summer's from high school, were a recurring couple in the show. Their relationship started at a house party and eventually led to marriage. However, Tammy's loyalty was betrayed when she sided with the Galactic Federation and pursued Rick. Despite this betrayal, Birdperson still had feelings for Tammy. Unfortunately, both of them ended up dead side by side. Rick then decided to partially rebuild Birdperson using cybernetics. During the process, Rick discovered repressed memories of Birdperson and Tammy having a child together, although it is unclear when this could have happened in their relationship timeline. Immediately after they met, they moved in together, but it is unknown how much time passed before Tammy betrayed Birdperson at their wedding. Rick informs Birdperson about their child, prompting Birdperson to leave in search of their offspring. It is possible that viewers may witness the presence of a bird-human child on screen, with or without Rick's assistance.
6 Beth & Space Beth's Affair Needs Closure In Rick & Morty Season 7
When Beth contemplated the idea of leaving her family to embark on a space exploration, Rick decided to clone her, only to accidentally mix up the clones. In spite of the confusion, he sent one of the clones into space without knowing which one was which. Eventually, the Beth who stayed behind discovers the existence of the clone, leading to a meeting between the two Beths. Space Beth, much like Rick, exhibits a colder and more distant demeanor, reflecting her nature as an explorer. As season 6 progresses and Space Beth spends more time with the rest of the family, both Beths develop an intimate relationship.
This unconventional relationship between the two Beths creates an intriguing dynamic, as it aligns with Beth's personality to find true love and fulfillment within herself. However, their identical nature also poses a potential conflict, as their relationship may become a ticking time bomb. Furthermore, Jerry, who is known for his insecurities, may struggle with being married to two versions of Beth. The strain of this unique situation could prove to be too much for him. It is also plausible that Space Beth may harbor a desire to return to Earth and her original family, adding further complexity to her relationship with Beth. Audiences might witness the return of the original Beth and Jerry, with Space Beth uncomfortably navigating her quasi-incestuous relationship with herself.
5 Ricky & Morty Need To Finally Get Some Szechuan Sauce In Season 7
In season 3 of the show, Rick developed a strong obsession with Szechuan Sauce while in a simulated interrogation by the Galactic Federation. In an attempt to satisfy his craving, Rick even used it as motivation to escape the Federation and save his family. With his ability to navigate between infinite universes, it should be relatively easy for Rick to find a dimension where the sauce still exists or one from a bygone era. It would be interesting to see if the actual sauce lives up to Rick's memories. Resolving this craving of Rick's could be a great move for the show's writers, as they have had success with storylines based on references from earlier episodes.
4 Mr Poopybutthole Must Turn His Life Around In Season 7
Mr Poopybutthole made his debut in the episode "Total Rickall" where the Smith family fell victim to a parasite that created false memories and spawned various characters. Among them was Mr Poopybutthole, whom Beth initially believed to be imaginary due to his unfamiliarity. However, it was later revealed that he was an old family friend. Following this revelation, Mr Poopybutthole began appearing at the end of seasons or in post-episode credits and even developed his own storyline, recovering from a gunshot wound, getting married, and having a child.
In the last appearance during the finale of season 6, Mr Poopybutthole discusses his divorce and unfortunately ends up breaking both his legs. What lies ahead for Mr Poopybutthole remains a mystery. It is possible that he may experience a downward spiral or undergo a remarkable recovery, turning his life around. Given his previous profession as a professor, he could potentially revive his career or accompany the Smith family on more thrilling adventures.
3 Rick Prime Needs To Be Hunted Down In Rick & Morty Season 7
Rick Prime, responsible for the demise of Rick C137's wife, prompted the invention of the portal gun. Despite his efforts, he failed to locate Rick Prime. However, Rick Prime had already introduced portal technology to other Ricks. Rick, in an attempt to find closure, orchestrated a peaceful reunion between all the Ricks and urged them to search for Prime Rick's realm. Eventually, he discovered and integrated himself into the life of Beth, Prime Rick's daughter, without her knowledge of his alternate dimensional identity. Finding Rick Prime would provide the closure Rick sought and would mark the beginning of a fresh chapter in his life.
2 Rick & Morty Season 7 Needs An Interdimensional Cable Part 3 Episode
The show has had two interdimensional cable episodes, which have become favorites among audiences. These episodes provided a fresh perspective on the infinite number of worlds and lives in the universe. One episode even featured Gerry as an international movie star. Interdimensional cable episodes serve as enjoyable filler episodes, offering a break from the complex multi-timeline canon that can sometimes leave viewers overwhelmed. With Roiland's departure, there is now the potential for a whole new range of bizarre commercials and shows.
1 Rick & Jerry's Friendship Needs To Be Expanded In Season 7
Rick and Jerry's relationship has always been strained, with Rick expressing his belief that Jerry trapped Beth by impregnating her with Summer, leading to wasted potential. Jerry often feels that Beth seeks validation from Rick, but he criticizes Rick for abandoning his family in the past. Despite Rick's mistreatment, Jerry continually tries to earn his father-in-law's approval, only to lose his respect in return.
In recent seasons, Rick has gradually started to respect Jerry more. An initially pity-filled adventure resulted in Jerry saving Rick's life, sparking the potential for their relationship to evolve and grow stronger. Character development is crucial for a show's progression, and witnessing the two form a stronger bond would be intriguing. If Rick and Jerry do establish a better connection in Rick and Morty season 7, it will undoubtedly impact the family dynamics, particularly Beth's need for Rick's approval and Rick's unique companionship with Morty.
