Director Shawn Levy has received a surprising level of creative freedom from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy for his upcoming Star Wars movie.
Kennedy's mandate to Levy was to produce a film that encompasses his personal style, taste, and artistic essence within the framework of a Star Wars story. The triumph of Star Wars: Andor, where storytelling took precedence over the familiar Star Wars universe, hints at a potential shift towards emphasizing the creative vision of filmmakers in upcoming Star Wars endeavors.
Some Star Wars enthusiasts believe that Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, controls the franchise with an iron fist. However, the reality seems to be much calmer, as evident in an upcoming film. Despite being occupied with Deadpool 3, director Shawn Levy has been confirmed to helm a Star Wars movie. This is in addition to his successful roles as producer and director for Netflix's popular series Stranger Things. Remarkably, Levy manages to handle his various commitments effectively, which is why those in charge are not concerned about his upcoming Star Wars project. This is the directive given by Kennedy to Levy.
In a recent interview with Variety, Levy disclosed a surprising directive he received from Kennedy regarding his Star Wars film. "When Kathy Kennedy brought me on board to create a Star Wars movie," he responded when asked about his approach to the franchise, "her primary instruction to me was 'I want a Shawn Levy movie. I desire a narrative and a tone that reflects your unique style and your contribution to your films — with a Star Wars story.' Consequently, I have felt incredibly empowered." To provide a glimpse of this newfound creative freedom, fans might catch a preview of it when Deadpool 3 is released.
Levy expressed that his current experience with Marvel on Deadpool has solidified his belief in the possibility of feeling empowered and personally connected to a film within a larger universe. He stated that the Deadpool movie has exceeded his expectations and aligns with his and Ryan Reynolds' initial vision. With this optimistic mindset, Levy approaches the development of his Star Wars movie, confident that his instincts will guide him.
This sense of freedom may be partially attributed to the success of Star Wars: Andor. Unlike previous Star Wars projects, Andor prioritized a compelling story over conforming to the Star Wars setting. It was a creation of showrunner Tony Gilroy that happened to be set in the Star Wars universe. This emphasis on the creator's vision over the franchise as a whole may be more common.
Levy's untitled Star Wars film does not have a confirmed release date at this time.
