Shawn Levy, the renowned director of popular Netflix series Stranger Things and upcoming film Deadpool 3, has provided exciting details about his Star Wars project. In November last year, it was revealed that Levy was engaged in discussions to helm his own Star Wars movie, which would commence production after the release of Deadpool 3 and the final installments of Stranger Things. Levy enthusiastically verified the news on Twitter, expressing, "My inner child is ecstatic, and so is my adult self."
Levy recently spoke with Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar) about his involvement in a new Star Wars movie. He shared his excitement about receiving a call from Kathy Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, while he was in the edit room for All the Light We Cannot See. This conversation ultimately led to Levy being invited to develop and direct his own Star Wars movie. He expresses his passion for the Star Wars universe and his commitment to giving his all to creating a film that pays tribute to this beloved galaxy.
Details regarding the movie are currently undisclosed, but it is confirmed that Levy initiated its development this year. During a separate conversation with Collider, Levy offered an update on the project, stating that he and his team commenced development when the writers' strike commenced in May. Subsequently, when SAG-AFTRA initiated their strike in July, all production activities came to a standstill.
"We find ourselves in a state of limbo, much like many others in our industry," Levy expressed.
Lucasfilm has announced that in addition to Levy's movie, three new Star Wars films are being developed by directors James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Obaid-Chinoy's film will feature the return of Daisy Ridley as Jedi Master Rey and will take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker in the era of the New Jedi Order. Mangold's film will be set in the distant past, referred to as the Dawn of the Jedi era by Lucasfilm, while Filoni's film will be set during the New Republic era.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously confirmed that Taika Waititi, the director of Thor, is still slated to direct his own Star Wars film. She also mentioned that Rian Johnson, the director of The Last Jedi, may still have the opportunity to develop his own Star Wars trilogy when he becomes available.
