Meryl Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, have decided to end their 45-year marriage. Streep's representative released a statement on October 21, stating that Gummer and Streep have been living separate lives for over 6 years, but still hold care and respect for each other.
Page Six was the first to report the news.
The actress from "Only Murders in the Building" and Gummer, who is 76 years old, were last seen together in public at the 2018 Academy Awards. Gummer accompanied Streep on the red carpet before the ceremony, where Streep received her 21st Oscar nomination. (However, Streep ultimately did not win the Best Actress category, which was awarded to Frances McDormand.)
Streep was introduced to Gummer, a sculptor, in 1978 by her brother. They got married after six months and went on to have four children together: Henry (43), Mamie (40), Grace (37), and Louisa (32).
Meryl Streep and Don Gummer were photographed with their children Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa. Despite keeping their relationship private for a long time, Streep understood the key factors behind its success.
"Speaking to Vogue in 2002, the actress emphasized the importance of goodwill, flexibility, and occasionally staying silent. She acknowledged that there is no set formula for raising a family and described it as an ongoing negotiation. While she had a deep desire to work, she also valued strong loving connections in her life, unable to imagine sacrificing one for the other."
"Gummer consistently stood by Streep's side, both as her biggest supporter and as her red carpet companion throughout their marriage. In 2012, when Streep won an Oscar for her role in The Iron Lady, Gummer was the first person she acknowledged in her acceptance speech."
"I would like to express my gratitude to Don for his support. It means a lot to me that when I acknowledge him during my speech, they play music as a sign of appreciation. I want him to understand that everything I cherish in our lives has been made possible by him," she stated during the broadcast.
Furthermore, Streep and Gummer collaborated in parenting their children, with Streep frequently taking on the role of the strict parent while Gummer played the more lenient and understanding one.
“Teamwork plays a vital role. My husband, Don, actively contributed, albeit in a more laid-back manner when it came to raising our children. I, on the other hand, embodied the characteristics of a tiger mom,” Streep disclosed during an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald in June 2019. “During my son Henry's early childhood, he expressed a desire to learn the piano. Unfortunately, the teacher we hired failed to meet his expectations, causing him to lose interest. While I believed he should persist with lessons, my husband believed I was projecting my own aspirations onto him. Fast forward to now, my son is 37 and has become a skilled musician. Tiger Mom Meryl's intuition was indeed correct."
Streep further mentioned at that time that she had been excessively overprotective of her children, recognizing the importance of them gaining independence and learning to stand on their own.
Streep and Gummer have four grandchildren. Henry and his wife, Tamryn Storm Hawker, have two children. Mamie and her husband, Mehar Sethi, have a son. In March, Grace and her husband Mark Ronson had their first baby.
