Melissa McCarthy is standing up for Meghan Markle against critics who doubt her. The 53-year-old actress defended the 42-year-old Duchess of Sussex, expressing her confusion over why someone as "awesome" and "inspiring" as Meghan would face so much hate.
"It's really sad to see how women and others are unfairly targeted for no reason," she shared with Page Six at the Broadway premiere of "Suffs" on April 18. "Some people feel threatened by a strong, independent woman who lives life on her own terms."
McCarthy, who showed her support for Markle at the actress's 40th birthday party in August 2021, described the Duchess as "amazing."
She always finds inspiration in amazing people and has never felt threatened by them. Instead, she sees them as inspiring individuals. She believes that those who spread hate are the ones responsible for their own negativity.
In conclusion, she admires strong women and thinks they are truly amazing.
McCarthy joined Markle for tea on her 40th birthday to support the launch of the 40×40 mentorship program. The program aims to help women re-enter the workforce after the pandemic. During their time together, McCarthy playfully teased Markle about her royal status while they enjoyed their tea.
Despite Markle's lighthearted demeanor, she has faced relentless criticism since her relationship with Prince Harry began in 2016. From their courtship to their marriage, the duchess has been under public scrutiny for various aspects of her life, including her race, fashion choices, and even her pregnancies with son Archie, 4, and daughter Lilibet, 2.
"It's really interesting to reflect on the fact that I had to keep my distance from social media for my own wellbeing. The majority of the bullying and abuse I faced online occurred when I was pregnant with Archie and Lili, as well as when I had a newborn with each of them," Markle shared during the Opening Day Keynote Panel at SXSW in March. She expressed her confusion over the hateful behavior, emphasizing that it was not just catty but truly cruel. Markle questioned why individuals would choose to be so hurtful, especially during such a vulnerable and precious time as pregnancy and early motherhood.
Markle also highlighted her concern over the prevalence of women directing hate towards other women on social media platforms. She described her dismay at the toxic environment created by these sites, where individuals are encouraged to spread harmful comments and conspiracy theories. Markle emphasized the detrimental impact this can have on someone's mental health and physical safety, urging for a more positive and supportive online community.
Markle opened up about her struggles with public scrutiny in her and Harry’s Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, released in 2022. The series focused on their decision to step back from the royal family. She expressed disappointment in Buckingham Palace for not defending her against negative press, feeling like she was left vulnerable to criticism.
Furthermore, Markle highlighted the prevalence of false stories in the media, emphasizing that sensationalism often trumped the truth. She lamented how clickbait headlines overshadowed the real narrative, causing her distress and frustration.
Markle’s celebrity friends, such as Abigail Spencer and her Suits costar Patrick J. Adams, have supported her in the past. Recently, Kelly McKee Zajfen, the co-founder of Alliance of Moms, described Markle as a “powerful source of genuine love.”
A post by Kelly McKee Zajfen (@heartmom) on Instagram on April 18 expressed gratitude towards Meghan Markle for being an inspiration and providing support. Zajfen, who tragically lost her 9-year-old son, George, to a sudden illness in 2022, mentioned how Markle uplifts her and loves like a mother. Zajfen also thanked Markle for supporting the @allianceofmoms and their campaign, which aims to create better futures for young parents who have been in foster care.
Harry, who is 39 years old, has always been a strong supporter of his wife. He made a public statement in 2016 to defend her against the harsh treatment from the media.
In the statement, Prince Harry expressed his concern for Meghan Markle's safety and his disappointment in not being able to protect her. He strongly disagreed with the idea that this mistreatment was just part of being in a relationship with him. He emphasized that this was not a game, but their lives at stake.
