Although it concluded its run five years ago, Suits remains one of the most influential TV series of 2023. Recently, Meghan Markle shared her thoughts on the show's resurging popularity on Netflix.
Originally premiered on the USA Network in 2011, Suits revolves around a talented young lawyer with a remarkable photographic memory who cleverly secures a position at one of New York City's prestigious law firms, where he works under its top-notch closer.
It aired for nine seasons and concluded in 2019 due to declining ratings, coinciding with the departure of Markle and Patrick J. Adams.
However, following its release on Netflix earlier this year, it surged to the number one position in the streaming ratings and maintained that spot for an impressive period of time, accumulating a total of 45 billion minutes viewed.
Meghan Markle reacts to Suits success
During a red carpet interview with Variety at the Power of Women event, Markle was asked how she felt about Suits returning to the mass consciousness in such a prolific way.
“Isn’t it amazing?” she exclaimed, and although she claimed to have "no idea" why it has been so popular this year, she added: “Working on it was fantastic, with such an incredible cast and crew. We had an absolute blast. I dedicated seven seasons to it, which is quite a substantial amount. However, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a show these days that allows for binge-watching of such a large number of episodes. Perhaps that has something to do with it. Nonetheless, exceptional shows are timeless.”
Markle left the series in its seventh season because of her new responsibilities as the Duchess of Sussex following her marriage to Prince Harry. Creator Aaron Korsh explained that they made the decision to prioritize Meghan's wellbeing and future, knowing it would be easier to adjust the storyline accordingly rather than unexpectedly have her departure. Additionally, Korsh mentioned that the only plausible way to write off her character would be through a dramatic event such as a fatal accident.
Korsh initially denied rumors of a reboot, but the success of Suits has prompted the creation of a new series within the same universe, similar to the spin-off shows of NCIS and CSI.
