McCarthy Affirms Trump Support, Emphasizes 2024 Campaign Must Focus on Unity

Kevin McCarthy reaffirms support for Trump in 2024 race, emphasizing the need for a forward-looking campaign focused on America's future rather than seeking revenge

During a pre-taped interview on "CBS Sunday Morning," Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy affirmed his support for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race. He emphasized his backing for Trump while cautioning him against centering his re-election campaign on "revenge." Asked if Trump could rely on his support, McCarthy replied, "Yes," and when pressed for an official endorsement, he chuckled and repeated, "I will support the president. I will support President Trump."

McCarthy told CNN's Manu Raju last month that he supports the former president, but he emphasized that he has not officially endorsed anyone. CNN has contacted McCarthy to clarify if he will endorse Trump.

Trump has been the clear front-runner in the GOP presidential primary so far. According to a recent Wall Street Journal poll, the former president has garnered 59% support among potential Republican primary voters nationwide. Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are effectively tied for a distant second place, with 15% and 14% support, respectively.

This trend is consistent with other recent polling on the Republican primary, which has consistently shown Trump with majority support among potential GOP voters nationwide.

Democrats and GOP critics of Trump have attempted to portray him as a threat to democracy if he wins the White House again. They point to Trump's rhetoric about "retribution" and a set of policy ideas that would increase presidential power over non-political aspects of the federal government. Despite Trump's dismissal of the criticism, McCarthy told CBS that the former president needs to refocus away from seeking revenge on his perceived enemies if he returns to the White House.

McCarthy emphasized that the reelection shouldn't be driven by revenge. He emphasized that America does not want to see a mindset of seeking retribution. He admitted to losing the job as speaker and acknowledged that he may not have the best advice. However, he declared his love for the country and his commitment to making tomorrow better than today. He expressed his determination to do everything in his power and be actively involved in the process of creating positive change.

When asked if he would consider serving in a future Trump administration, McCarthy stated that he is willing to consider the opportunity if it's the right fit for him. He emphasized that his willingness to take on a role would depend on being the most suitable candidate for the position, highlighting his previous collaboration with President Trump on various policies and their honest relationship.
