Marvel Studios' official timeline book has rectified the timeline error in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It now acknowledges that the events of the film occur 4 years after The Avengers, rather than the previously stated 8 years.
Marvel's president, Kevin Feige, acknowledged that the time card error was unintentional and has since released a timeline to provide clarification. Though some fans may not find the explanation of a misplaced case file entirely satisfying, it is reassuring that Marvel Studios has taken the necessary steps to address and correct the mistake, thereby bringing clarity to the timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spider-Man: Homecoming garnered praise from many viewers but also faced backlash from fans. Some argued against Iron Man's presence in the film and voiced concerns about the design of Tom Holland's suit, while others desired a more traditional Spider-Man origin story. Notwithstanding these criticisms, one particular mistake lingered, potentially disrupting the established timeline. The movie commences with a scene directly following The Avengers' events, followed by a timecard indicating "8 years later." However, the subsequent events in the film occur only 4 years later.
Luckily for fans, Marvel Studios has rectified this glaring Spider-Man: Homecoming mistake in their new book Marvel Studios' The Marvel Cinematic Universe - An Official Timeline published by Dorling Kindersley. Along with the title card, Adrien Toomes mentions that his criminal operation has remained unnoticed by the authorities for “Eight years, not a word from the Feds.” On page 173 of the book, Loki's Miss Minutes addresses this discrepancy, attributing it to a missing TVA case file. “Redline alert! Hi again! Adrien Toomes states that the Battle of New York took place eight years ago, but in reality, it occurred only four years earlier. This one’s a real head-scratcher for us—I speculate that an analyst misplaced the case file.”
"All the debates surrounding it have led us to the conclusion that we should eventually release a timeline to clarify everything," stated Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, when discussing the Spider-Man: Homecoming time card in 2017. While the intention was not to confuse anyone, Feige admitted he wouldn't approach it the same way again but assured that it all aligns with the overall narrative. Remembering this error and its impact on the timeline, Marvel Studios rectified the situation by officially publishing it and offering an explanation within their fictional universe.
Certainly, fans were likely hoping for a different explanation than a misplaced case file, nevertheless, it is commendable that Marvel Studios has formally acknowledged their mistake. Additionally, it is reassuring that they have confirmed the film's placement four years after The Avengers, contradicting the previously believed eight-year gap. With a vast catalogue of 32 films and 9 streaming series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's timeline can already be perplexing, making Spider-Man: Homecoming's oversight all the more challenging to navigate.
