Marvel's Spider-Man 2 debuted with an exciting gameplay reveal showcasing the dynamic symbiote suit. Instead of just unveiling the appearance of the suit, fans were treated to one of the early symbiote gameplay sequences in the game. When Miles Morales sees Peter Parker wearing it, he doesn't immediately suspect that the black suit is the cause of Peter's unusual behavior. However, it is clear that wearing the symbiote has granted Peter a wide range of tendril abilities that he previously did not possess.
Eventually, the symbiote will be separated from Peter and either return to Harry Osborn or bond with another host. Without the symbiote, Peter's gameplay will have a significant role to play. The addition of new abilities while wearing the symbiote is likely to be a substantial part of the game, as it wouldn't have been revealed so early on if it were just a minor feature. Therefore, playing as Peter may not be as fulfilling once the symbiote is inevitably removed and he reverts back to his ordinary abilities and gadgets.
Insomniac’s Peter Parker Might Not Feel as Fun in Sequels without the Symbiote
If Peter no longer possesses the symbiote by the end of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, it will be interesting to see how Insomniac plans to enhance the gameplay. If utilizing the symbiote abilities makes Peter's gameplay more enjoyable than before, then Insomniac might have revealed their best feature prematurely.
Alternatively, Insomniac could be taking a unique approach with Peter in this game, possibly leading to his untimely demise, a common narrative device for main characters in media. Alternatively, he may retain the symbiote for future sequels. If Peter is able to maintain control over the symbiote and foster a truly symbiotic relationship, the alien threads could become his defining characteristic as Spider-Man, placing him on par with the already immensely enhanced Miles.
The new staple for Peter will be the four metal appendages emerging from his back, taking inspiration from the red-and-gold Stark-manufactured Iron Spider suit in the Civil War event in Amazing Spider-Man #529. These mechanical appendages were partially revealed in Marvel's Spider-Man's Iron Spider suit, influenced by the MCU. If these appendages are to play a significant role in Peter's gameplay, they must possess versatility and functionality, although they will still be overshadowed by Miles' natural abilities such as bioelectricity and optic camouflage. Striking a delicate balance is essential, as the symbiote is highly revered and enjoyable gameplay with it is crucial. However, making it too enjoyable may result in the absence of the symbiote later on feeling like a loss of a core feature for the player. While Peter will always be interesting from a narrative perspective, without the symbiote, he may consistently fall short in comparison to his fellow Spider-Man unless Insomniac finds innovative ways to enhance his character in each new sequel.
In Marvel's Spider-Man 2, gadgets are being improved to offer a sleeker design and enhanced functionality. For instance, players will have the ability to create Web Line perches spontaneously, making stealthy encounters effortless to navigate. Once Peter separates from the symbiote, he may find himself experimenting more with these innovative creations. However, if Insomniac decides to take a daring and unique approach, Peter could potentially retain his new alien suit, making it an integral component of his gameplay going forward. The highly anticipated Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 20th.
