Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men '97 introduces the latest toy featuring Ororo Monroe sporting Storm's revamped appearance and an updated X-Jet.
Debuting on Fox Kids Network in 1992, X-Men: The Animated Series remains highly regarded as one of the finest Marvel cartoon shows. This acclaimed series remarkably adapted comic storylines, surpassing the portrayal of the mutant superhero team in any live-action X-Men film. With its enduring impact, it continues to shape the beloved imagery of these iconic characters for many fans. Disney's announcement to revive the series in November 2021 sparked immense excitement among fans, even though the original cartoon concluded in 1997.
Disney has begun unveiling merchandise in anticipation of the upcoming premiere of X-Men '97, and it has already showcased the reappearance of a beloved X-Men adversary. The most recent release features the ever-popular Ororo Monroe in her iconic role as Storm, and also highlights the legendary X-Jet. Although both have undergone some slight alterations to their original '90s designs, fans have wasted no time in expressing their enthusiastic approval.
The Storm figurine, standing at four inches, showcases the Egyptian weather goddess with her iconic mohawk from the Days of Future Past storyline. Her costume remains faithful to the original design. In contrast, the X-Jet has undergone some upgrades. The reliable mode of transportation for the X-Men now boasts a sportier appearance and larger windows. As Storm is the sole team member included with the X-Jet, fans speculate that she will assume the role of the primary pilot.
Despite her new haircut, Storm's voice continues to be portrayed by Alison Sealy-Smith, the original voice actress from X-Men: The Animated Series. Several other original voice actors, including Lenore Zann as Rogue, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, George Buza as Beast, and Chris Potter as Gambit, will also reprise their roles. Additionally, the show welcomes new voice talent, including the renowned Jennifer Hale.
The plot of X-Men '97 has not been fully disclosed, but it has been confirmed by Disney that the primary antagonist for the first season will be Mr. Sinister. In the original series, Mr. Sinister was a recurring enemy of the X-Men and had a well-thought-out plan to defeat them. Of course, no X-Men story would be complete without the iconic character Magneto, and X-Men '97 is no different. While the specific role of the omega-level mutant, Eric Lensherr, is still unknown, Disney has announced that he will be taking on a leadership position within the X-Men.
Aside from this information, very little else is currently known about X-Men '97, including whether or not it will be released in late 2023. Fans will have to wait to see the updated versions of Storm, the X-Jet, and the rest of the team. In the meantime, they can always revisit the original series by streaming it on Disney Plus.
X-Men '97 is expected to release on Disney Plus in late 2023.
