Amidst the mixed reviews and critical backlash towards Thor: Love and Thunder's comedic tone, Chris Hemsworth has weighed in on the matter. Despite the movie's massive success at the box office, with a worldwide gross of $750 million, Hemsworth acknowledged the criticisms and agreed that the film "had too much fun." In a recent interview with GQ, the Australian actor, who has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, reiterated his earlier statement that his return to the franchise would require a significant shift in tone.
I believe we may have gotten carried away with the enjoyment. The atmosphere became increasingly lighthearted to the point of absurdity. It can be difficult to maintain objectivity when you are at the center of something. Although, I find the entire process to be exhilarating. One can never predict how the audience will react.
Did Thor: Love And Thunder Really Get The Tone Wrong?
Thor: Love and Thunder, directed by Taika Waititi, was intended to be a darker addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the film struggled to find a balance between the serious themes of Jane Foster's battle with cancer and the introduction of the villainous Gorr the God Butcher, and the lighthearted, comedic tone that MCU films are known for. As a result, the film may have come across as trying too hard to be both dramatic and funny, potentially detracting from the impact of its more serious moments.
The Thor franchise had a balanced start, particularly with the 2011 installment. However, the release of Thor: The Dark World revealed that the audience was not receptive to the increased grittiness. This led to Thor: Ragnarok and eventually Thor: Love and Thunder. Unfortunately, the 2022 movie took it too far, resulting in a problem for the franchise.
Currently, Marvel Studios has no official plans for Thor 5, and it remains uncertain whether Hemsworth will return to the MCU. If Hemsworth decides to leave the franchise, it would be ideal to have at least one more film that combines the best of both worlds to create the ultimate Thor movie. Until then, Thor: Love and Thunder may be the last time viewers see Hemsworth as the Asgardian Avenger, unless he returns for the next Avengers movies.
