Mark Ronson Discards Dismantled Acceptance Speech into Garbage After Golden Globes Setback

Mark Ronson, a nominee at the 2024 Golden Globes for Best Original Song on the 'Barbie' soundtrack, shares a poignant image of his crumpled acceptance speech tossed aside in the trash after the awards ceremony

Mark Ronson is handling his Golden Globes defeat with grace. "Gucci at the globes with my one true ️," 48-year-old Ronson posted on Instagram Monday, January 8, along with several photos from the 2024 awards show.

Ronson kicked off his slideshow with a picture of himself and his wife, Grace Gummer, at the January 7th ceremony, where they both rocked stylish black Gucci outfits. He also shared a video from the red carpet of himself and Gummer smiling lovingly at each other.

Although Ronson's post started off as a lovely recap of their date night, things seemed to take a turn on the third slide when he posted a photo of his trash can with what appeared to be his acceptance speech. The paper was torn up and placed on top of the bin.

Ronson received nominations for Best Original Song for the Barbie movie tracks "Dance the Night" and "I'm Just Ken," performed by Dua Lipa and Ryan Gosling. Following a post of a torn up speech, fans quickly showed their support in the comments after his loss.

"Mark, I keep telling everyone that you will win an Oscar this year! I just know it in my bones!!," one user wrote, while another replied, "You don't need a Golden Globe when you've already proven to every listener the spectacular work you and your team did for the movie score. Congratulations champ."

Despite Ronson not winning the Golden Globe, another Barbie song did. Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas, were the winners for their ballad "What Was I Made For?" "I was completely surprised by this," Eilish, 22, said in her acceptance speech. "I want to thank my brother, Finneas. You are the reason for who I am. I want to express my gratitude to Greta [Gerwig] and Noah [Baumbach] for creating this amazing film. I also want to thank Margot [Robbie] for being the Margot we all know and love."

When the Golden Globes revealed the nominees in December 2023, Lipa, 28, expressed her excitement about working on “Dance the Night” and her gratitude for the nomination. (Lipa also appeared in the film as Mermaid Barbie.)

In a statement, the singer shared, “Having the opportunity to write a song for a movie was truly special. Crafting the soundtrack for Barbie’s ‘best day ever’ was like solving a big puzzle with Mark, Andrew, and Caroline. This experience was completely unique compared to writing my own songs, and it’s one that will always stay with me.”

Despite missing out on a Golden Globe, Ronson still has the potential to win multiple accolades for his songs. He is nominated for two Grammy awards for his work on Barbie, including Song of the Year and Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media. It is believed that “Dance the Night” and “I’m Just Ken” may also receive Oscar nominations. Ronson previously won a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 2019 for his work on the hit song "Shallow" from the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga.
