Major Xbox Game Pass Title Ditches Console, Making its Way to PS5

A highly anticipated game, initially released on Xbox Game Pass, is now making its way to the PlayStation 5, enticing players with a plethora of exciting enhancements and enhanced features

Highlights

The Last Case of Benedict Fox, a former day one Xbox Game Pass title, is coming to PlayStation 5 with improved visuals, enemy AI, and faster combat.

Smaller games available on third-party Game Pass sometimes become available on PlayStation at a later date, and vice versa, expanding their potential audience. The release date for The Last Case of Benedict Fox: Definitive Edition on PS5 has not been disclosed yet; the developer has only stated that it will be "Coming Soon."

PlayStation 5 players will soon have the opportunity to play The Last Case of Benedict Fox, a game that was originally released on the Xbox Game Pass. Benedict Fox is a 2D action platformer metroidvania with a lovecraftian storyline about a detective connected to a demon.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox had promising aspects as a day one Xbox Game Pass title before its release. Its combat and art style were reminiscent of the popular and highly regarded 2D metroidvania games Ori, which are exclusive to the Xbox. However, Benedict Fox's launch date worked against it in terms of generating attention, as it came out one week after the highly anticipated Dead Island 2 and just one day before Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Additionally, Xbox's own game Redfall launched the following week in early May, further overshadowing The Last Case of Benedict Fox, even though it was available on the Game Pass from day one.

Development studio Plot Twist has released a new trailer announcing the arrival of The Last Case of Benedict Fox: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5. This enhanced version of the game will include improvements in visuals, enemy AI, and faster combat, along with other upgrades. While not confirmed, it is likely that these enhancements will also be available as an update for the Xbox version around the same time as the PS5 release. However, no specific release date has been provided for the PS5 launch of Benedict Fox, only that it is "Coming Soon."

It is common for smaller third-party Xbox Game Pass titles to later become available on PlayStation, and vice versa. This year, some of the Game Pass console exclusives for 2022, such as Jumpship's Somerville and Squanch Games' High On Life, have become available on PlayStation. The latter made a significant impact when it was released on Game Pass in December. On the other hand, some of PlayStation 5's console exclusives, like the puzzle game Maquette and the action platformer Solar Ash, have recently made their way to Xbox. It is exciting to see these smaller games gain a new audience on a different platform, especially if they initially went unnoticed.

With the confirmation of The Last Case of Benedict Fox coming to PlayStation 5, it appears to be an ideal fit for a Nintendo Switch release as well. As a 2D action platformer, Benedict Fox aligns perfectly with the type of indie games that thrive on Nintendo's platform. Additionally, its relatively low graphical demand makes a potential Switch port a logical choice. While Benedict Fox anticipates its revitalization on PlayStation 5, it will be intriguing to observe its reception among a broader audience on a new platform.

Currently, The Last Case of Benedict Fox is accessible on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a PS5 version currently under development.
