Major Setback for Sony's Spider-Man Project Sparks Huge Speculation

Sony's Spider-Man spinoff movie appears to have met its demise, leaving both fans and the project's former writer uncertain about its fate

The Silver Sable spinoff movie has been canceled, according to its former writer, Lindsey Anderson Beer.

Sony's track record of unsuccessful Spider-Man spinoffs comes as no surprise, making the cancellation of the project quite expected.

Nevertheless, fans can still anticipate a range of other Spider-Man endeavors, such as the Spider-Verse short film, upcoming films, and television shows.

The Spider-Man spinoff movie Silver Sable, which was announced by Sony, the production home of the Spider-Verse franchise, appears to have been cancelled, as per its former writer.

Ever since Spider-Man made his debut in 1962, he has become one of the most beloved heroes in Marvel Comics. With each passing generation, fans have fallen in love with Peter Parker and the extensive roster of Spider-People, allies, and acquaintances that have been introduced throughout the character's journey. One of these characters is Silver Sable, a mercenary and CEO of a multinational corporation who first appeared in the comics and later made appearances in other Spider-Man media. Recently, Silver Sable was unveiled in a trailer for Insomniac's highly successful video game adaptation of Spider-Man.

After initially being considered for a live-action series alongside Spidey frenemy Black Cat, who similarly made her debut in the Spider-Man video game adaptation, Sony Studios had plans for a solo spin-off centered around Silver Sable. However, it seems that fans have now received confirmation that this project is no longer in development. Lindsey Anderson Beer, the writer who was previously attached to the project, revealed to ComicBook that Sony had initially shown interest but is not currently pursuing it. She mentioned that she had to leave the project to work on another one at the time and was involved as a temporary writer. "But yeah, I'm not sure," she added.

Major Setback for Sony's Spider-Man Project Sparks Huge Speculation

The Silver Sable movie has suffered a similar fate as Bad Bunny's El Muerto movie, which also recently fell through at Sony. This comes as no surprise, considering the numerous failed attempts at giving individual characters their own projects within Sony's Spider-Man spinoffs. As the mainline Tom Holland-led films became more connected to the MCU canon, any spin-offs that didn't integrate into the multi-billion-dollar franchise were bound to encounter difficulties in both production and fan interest. Despite having more excitement from potential viewers compared to the ill-fated Morbius solo film, Sony still faced significant risks.

Despite the disappointing news about the Silver Sable movie, fans can find solace in the exciting lineup of upcoming films and shows. The Spider-Verse short film has recently unveiled its official synopsis, building anticipation for its release. Additionally, Sony has a range of other projects on track as per their original plans. Although the SAG-AFTRA strike persists, the conclusion of the WGA action ensures that Sony can proceed with the development of new Spider-Man projects.
