Madonna's long-standing feud with Cher was sparked again during her Celebration Tour in London.
During her concert, a TikTok fan recorded a clip on Sunday, October 15, where Madonna, 65, featured an interlude that showcased several artists, including Ariana Grande, talking about the pop icon's musical legacy. The interlude also included a brief snippet from a 1991 interview with Cher, 77, where the "Believe" singer referred to Madonna as "mean."
In an extended version of the revived interview, Cher reveals her admiration for certain aspects of Madonna, but expresses her dislike for her mean behavior. Cher recalled inviting Madonna to her house on a couple of occasions due to their mutual friendship with Sean Penn, but was taken aback by how rude she was to everyone present. Cher believes that Madonna consistently behaves like a spoiled brat.
Cher has consistently expressed her dislike for Madonna over the years. During an interview on the Wogan talk show in 1991, Cher once again addressed their alleged feud.
"I must say, it has been blown out of proportion," she shared at the time. "While I was in America, I never openly expressed my feelings about her, but when someone asked me what I thought, I mentioned that she's incredibly creative despite not being exceptionally talented or beautiful. I did find her to be somewhat rude, but I don't hold any strong negative feelings towards her. I do admire her willingness to push boundaries and do whatever she pleases, though."
Almost two decades later, there appeared to be a sense of tranquility between the pair. During an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in 2013, Cher revealed that she and Madonna were in a harmonious state.
"Madge and I have experienced our fair share of challenges, but no, I'm completely at ease with her," she expressed back then.
In a Reddit AMA that year, Cher expressed her deep admiration for Madonna, acknowledging her as one of the most extraordinary artists she has known. Despite not liking everything Madonna does, Cher recognized her ability to consistently be at the forefront of trends and produce exceptional music videos. While she had originally perceived Madonna as unpleasant, Cher clarified that she never truly hated her.
The singers reunited in March 2017 at the Women's March, where they were seen chatting backstage before Madonna's performance. "Trump brought Madonna and Cher together, so there's that!" Andy Cohen captioned a photo capturing the moment.
Although the duo appeared to have a good relationship, Cher once again dissed Madonna in September 2018. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Cher was prompted to reveal her top three dream duet partners. "Oh! Adele, Pink ... and not Madonna," the Grammy winner jokingly exclaimed.
