Laverne Cox is taking each day as it comes while adjusting to her recent breakup.
During the May 16 episode of Nick Viall's "The Viall Files" podcast, Cox, 51, shared, "I am recently single. It's really new, just over a month. It feels strange to talk about."
Cox met her last boyfriend in 2020 during a trip from Los Angeles to New York City to buy an apartment. Although she never shared his name, she was initially looking for a casual relationship. However, they had a strong connection despite a 21-year age gap. She even stopped seeing other people because she thought he could be "the one." Unfortunately, the relationship ended on April 2.
Reflecting on the breakup, Cox expressed gratitude for experiencing a deep love and care from her ex-boyfriend. She mentioned that therapy played a significant role in helping her cope with the end of the relationship. The actress emphasized the healing aspect of the connection, mentioning that love can help heal past traumas and attachment issues. Cox also acknowledged the personal growth she has achieved through self-work and healing.
She continued to share, "It was like a dream where we had amazing adventures and had a great time. It was truly incredible. Although it's sad that it's come to an end, I'm thankful that I prioritize loving myself over loving him."
Cox made the decision to end their relationship because she recognized the importance of honoring her boundaries and values above all else.
"I have a part of me that is like a child and it's important for me to keep it safe and protected," Cox shared with Viall, 43. "While he's a great person, I must always respect and safeguard this vulnerable part of me. Setting boundaries and staying true to my values is crucial. If things don't feel right, I need to make changes."
Cox is unsure if she and her former partner will ever get back together, but she values the time they spent together and has no regrets.
"It has been the love of my life and the love of my dreams," she said. "It was amazing, but I also realized that I have never really taken a break from dating men and sex for more than a couple of months in the past 30 years."
After ending her relationship, Cox decided to have a 30-day period of no contact. They recently had their first conversation earlier this month, and according to Cox, her ex is still dealing with the heartbreak.
