The Walking Dead: Dead City star Lauren Cohan has shared a significant distinction between her new spinoff and the original series. Cohan, reprising her role as Maggie in The Walking Dead: Dead City, finds herself alongside Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they embark on a mission to rescue Maggie's son from a new threat known as The Croat (played by Željko Ivanek) in Manhattan. The first season of the spinoff is scheduled to consist of six episodes.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Cohan disclosed a major disparity in the filming experience between The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: Dead City. Unlike the former, Cohan expressed that she was aware of the direction the story would take right from the beginning. Read Cohan's complete statement below:
One thing that was unique was my prior knowledge of the season's beginning and end, which made it a concise season. However, what truly captivated me was witnessing how various characters embodied different aspects of the apocalypse, offering a fresh perspective on themes we had previously explored in the original show. I was constantly surprised by the depth of Gaius [Charles]'s character and Željko [Ivanek]'s character, as they brought forth entirely new emotions and experiences.
How Dead City Benefits From A Smaller Season
Cohan's understanding of The Walking Dead: Dead City's trajectory is likely due to the show's first season consisting of only six episodes, significantly fewer than the typical 16 episodes of a regular season of The Walking Dead. This limited episode count necessitates a concise storytelling approach, requiring thorough planning prior to filming.
In The Walking Dead: Dead City, Cohan was well aware of the eventual outcome of Maggie and Negan's relationship. Although Negan is currently assisting Maggie in rescuing Hershel, there remains underlying tension between them due to Negan's past actions, specifically his killing of Glenn in season 7. Furthermore, The Croat, a former Savior, has a connection to Negan. As the first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City progresses, the significance of The Croat's previous association with Negan will be further explored.
Given that the first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City was carefully planned from the start, the spinoff will need to swiftly address the various plot points introduced in its initial episode. As a result, Maggie and Negan are likely to play a significant role in a larger conflict involving The Croat as they endeavor to save Hershel. With only five episodes remaining in the first season, it will be intriguing to see how the show manages its limited episode count while also handling Maggie and Negan's rescue mission.
