Speculation about the royal family is buzzing, but King Charles III's 2024 Commonwealth Day speech was all about optimism for himself and the U.K.
In a pre-recorded message that was posted on The Commonwealth's website on Monday, March 11, the 75-year-old Charles shared, "As I recently celebrated my own 75th birthday, it brings me joy to look back on how the Commonwealth has been a constant presence throughout my life."
He expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his battle with cancer, calling The Commonwealth "a precious source of strength, inspiration, and pride".
The monarch shared his appreciation for the kind and thoughtful good wishes he received for his health, promising to continue serving to the best of his ability. He expressed his unwavering belief in the shared efforts and potential of the people within the Commonwealth, stating his confidence in their continued support for one another on their vital journey together.
The royal family started off 2024 with the announcement that Charles would undergo surgery for an enlarged prostate. In February, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer, although it was not prostate cancer. Royal reporter Omid Scobie later confirmed this news.
Following his diagnosis, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne took on Charles' royal duties and public appearances. In a statement released last month via Buckingham Palace, Charles expressed gratitude for the support he received after sharing his diagnosis. He also praised the organizations that help cancer patients and their families, both in the U.K. and globally, for their dedication and care.

During his first public appearance since being diagnosed, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Charles expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the public, revealing that their well-wishes have often moved him to tears.
Charles resumed his royal duties this month, starting with a meeting with Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt at Buckingham Palace. Shortly after, on March 7, he welcomed Jamaica's high commissioner, Alexander Williams, and his wife, Carol Watson-Williams, for a meeting at the palace.
Since Charles has returned to work, Princess Kate Middleton has been recovering from abdominal surgery earlier this year. Their health issues have raised concerns about the royal family's future, as there are only four major royals under the age of 70.
Robert Hardman, author of The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, shared in an exclusive interview with We in January that the situation poses a challenge for the monarchy. He noted that the working unit of the royal family has become much smaller than before.

Despite the palace's initial announcement that Kate would be absent from royal events until Easter due to her recovery, there has been much speculation about her whereabouts on social media. Finally, on Sunday, March 10, the princess broke her silence by sharing a family photo with a message of gratitude: “Thank you for your kind wishes and ongoing support during the past two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day.”
Following the Associated Press's decision to retract the photo over concerns of potential editing, Kate issued a new statement. She clarified on social media, “Like many casual photographers, I sometimes experiment with editing. I want to apologize for any confusion caused by the family photo we shared yesterday. I hope all those celebrating had a wonderful Mother’s Day.”
Hours later, she was spotted leaving the palace with Prince William to go to a private appointment. The couple were photographed in a car leaving Windsor Palace on Monday.
