Kate Beckinsale alludes to the passing of her stepfather with a mysterious Instagram post. The 50-year-old British actress shared a cryptic black square on Thursday, January 11, just two days after posting pictures of herself and her family gathered around a hospital bed while she was still in her Golden Globes dress.
On Wednesday, January 10, the actress from Underworld shared a black square without a caption, leading many to believe it was in remembrance of her stepfather, Roy Battersby, who may have passed away. Additionally, after an awards ceremony on January 7, Beckinsale shared photos from the event, including hospital photos that many speculate to be of Battersby, 87, but she has not confirmed this publicly.

Beckinsale and her family received an outpouring of heartfelt condolences from fans in the comments, many of which have been acknowledged with "likes" and "pins" by Beckinsale’s account. One pinned comment read, “Please accept my condolences. Roy was a gift to you, Jude, and everyone who had the honor of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.”
Another fan's comment stated, “I’m so, so sorry. Roy was such a beautiful soul who I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and chatting with. It truly was a privilege to meet such a great man. Sending all my love to you all.”
Beckinsale has not revealed the reasons for her hospital visit after the Golden Globes, but a comment on her post suggests that her stepfather has been dealing with ongoing health issues. One follower praised her strength and professionalism for attending the Globes despite the circumstances, to which Beckinsale replied with gratitude for the support.

In August, the actress may have subtly referenced Battersby’s health struggles when she shared a tribute to her late cat, Clive. Alongside a heartfelt caption encouraging followers to "embrace grief," Beckinsale's post featured images of an elderly individual (whose identity was concealed) resting in a hospital bed and undergoing medical care.
Beckinsale’s mother, English actress Judy Loe, married Battersby in 1997. She was previously married to Richard Beckinsale, with whom she shares Kate, her only child, from 1977 to 1979.
