Josh Duhamel reveals that his marriage with Fergie ended due to his lack of interest in the Hollywood lifestyle, including red carpet appearances and fame, shedding light on the key factors behind their 2017 split
Josh Duhamel expressed his gratitude for his Hollywood success but admitted that being in the spotlight during his marriage to Fergie was overwhelming.
Duhamel, 50, confessed that he never fully embraced the fame that accompanied his relationship with Fergie, 48, during a recent interview with Graham Bensinger on October 4. He expressed longing for the simplicity of his true self, stating, "I just missed being who I really am, you know?" Duhamel, who ended his marriage to Fergie in September 2017 after eight years, elaborated that he simply isn't at ease with attending red carpets and engaging in the typical Hollywood lifestyle.
Reflecting on the past, Duhamel acknowledged the disparity between him and Fergie regarding their long-term residence. Hailing from North Dakota, Duhamel's background contrasted with that of the former member of the Black Eyed Peas, who was born and raised in Southern California.
"I've come to terms with that chapter of my life. She and I have a fantastic bond," he clarified. "There was nothing inherently flawed about our relationship. We had a wonderful time together. I believe we simply evolved in different directions and developed diverse passions."
Duhamel reminisced about his desire to return to North Dakota as he grew older, recognizing that the current lifestyle was not suitable for Fergie. He reassured that he held no resentment towards it, genuinely appreciating her kindness. Despite initially resisting the spotlight, the Shotgun Wedding actor eventually adapted to life in Hollywood. Nonetheless, his longing to eventually return to his hometown remained unchanged.
"It took me a while to truly feel a sense of belonging and fitting in," Duhamel expressed about his experience in Los Angeles. He revealed that his relocation to North Dakota has been immensely beneficial for his inner well-being. "This place here allows me to reconnect with the joy I experienced as a child, when I fell in love with nature, the outdoors, and the freedom to be creative and active." Anticipating his first child with wife Audra Mari, Duhamel acknowledged that "if one isn't cautious, the Hollywood lifestyle and the overall persona of L.A. can deplete one's spirit."
After his divorce, Duhamel discovered both a new love in Mari, 29, and a sense of equilibrium in his professional life by relocating to the Midwest.
"This place out here actually enhances my career because it allows me to reconnect with my true self," he expressed about his lake house. "When I'm in that environment, it's easy to lose sight of who you really are. Fortunately, I've never experienced that."
Duhamel remarked, "This is why Audra is perfect for me. We are both dedicated North Dakotans and share a passion for lake life."
This decision to embrace a more uncomplicated way of living has also influenced his coparenting dynamic with Fergie. "Our goal was to set a positive example for Axl," the actor revealed. "We both desired the same outcome - to provide him with a relaxed environment that is free of tension, discomfort, or stress."
