John Wick's universe continues to expand.
During an appearance on The Playlist's The Discourse podcast, director Chad Stahelski shared some exciting updates regarding the future of the action franchise with Lionsgate. This includes the development of a new TV show and an anime. Stahelski mentioned that the TV show might delve deeper into the enigmatic assassin culture led by The High Table, but assured that it will be a distinct project from Peacock's The Continental: From the World of John Wick miniseries. The miniseries explores the rise of Winston Scott as the manager of the famous New York hotel.
Stahelski hinted at the possibility of exploring different characters introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 rather than focusing solely on Wick or Winston. He expressed his admiration for Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama, and the Tracker (Shamier Anderson), highlighting how the TV show and other related content would allow them to expand the immersive world they have created. Stahelski believed that television would be a more suitable format for this expansion, as it allows viewers to delve into the backgrounds of the characters without the need for extensive setup.
Regarding the anime series, Stahelski emphasized the advantages of using this medium to explore Wick's world, as it provides an opportunity to tell unique and engaging stories that anime excels at. He reassured fans that they would still be able to enjoy the same level of excitement and entertainment through the TV show, while the anime series enriches their understanding of the John Wick universe. Stahelski briefly mentioned his involvement in The Continental, stating that his team provided some concepts and insights into their world, but ultimately, it was a separate creative team that took those ideas and made them their own in the show.
The Wick films were limited to John Wick's story, but his universe has expanded into various forms of media. This includes video games like John Wick Hex and the upcoming Ballerina movie, featuring Keanu Reeves in a supporting role. The Continental received mixed reviews, praised for its action scenes but criticized for its narrative and casting choice. Despite a fifth movie being announced, the director confirmed that Wick's story is currently concluded. The director is now working on a video game adaptation, while the co-director's next film will be released in March.
