Director Chad Stahelski has expressed his interest in exploring the stories of various characters in the John Wick universe through potential spin-offs in the form of TV series or movies. Having directed all four John Wick films, Stahelski has expanded the world beyond the titular character and introduced a diverse array of personalities, each deserving of their own spotlight. In an interview with Screen Rant to commemorate the release of John Wick: Chapter 4, Stahelski revealed his wish to delve deeper into the lives of characters such as The Bowery King, who has made appearances in multiple films, as well as fresh faces introduced in the latest installment. Read on for Stahelski's complete interview and statement.
I am intrigued by the characters in John Wick's world, particularly Akira played by Rina. The Homeless World fascinates me and I would love for the Bowery King to explore it further. Donnie Yen's character also piques my interest - I want to know more about his backstory. Additionally, I miss Halle Berry's character and I am curious to see if Common's character survived the second movie. Lastly, I would like to see The Adjudicator played by Asia Kate Dillon make a return. All of these characters are so compelling, and I can't wait to see them again.
Expanding The Franchise Beyond John Wick
John Wick's universe of the Continental, Winston, Charon, and the rules of the hotel revealed the existence of a vast criminal underworld. Director Stahelski expanded this world with complex characters, intricate mythology, and a constantly evolving storyline throughout the following John Wick movies. In the fourth chapter, John Wick: Chapter 4, the titular character sacrifices himself to protect his friends from the High Table's wrath. His death finally allows him to find peace after being drawn back into the dangerous world he tried to leave behind.
The John Wick universe is a treasure trove of stories waiting to be told, beyond just the titular character. The rich cast of characters introduced throughout the franchise offer endless possibilities for exploration and expansion. For instance, The Bowery King's backstory and rise to power could be a compelling subject for a standalone film, similar to The Continental. Furthermore, the ending of John Wick: Chapter 4 sets the stage for even more potential storylines, such as Akira's quest for vengeance and Caine's attempt to reconnect with his daughter.
In addition, there are opportunities to delve into the past, such as delving into Caine's friendship with John Wick and Shimazu Akira. Another avenue to explore is the lore of the High Table, possibly through following The Adjudicator and their role within this world. Meanwhile, Tracker's unique perspective as a meticulous observer of his targets could offer a fresh take on the assassin genre. With John Wick: Chapter 4 serving as a conclusion to the titular character's journey, director Stahelski has only just begun to scratch the surface of this expansive universe.
