Star Wars actor John Boyega has shared his rankings of the sequel trilogy films in which he played the role of stormtrooper-turned-Resistance General Finn. Boyega first joined the Star Wars franchise in the initial installment of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Since then, Boyega's relationship with the franchise has been filled with ups and downs, with the actor often speaking out about the flaws in how his character was portrayed.
During a recent interview with First We Feast, Boyega was asked to rate the Star Wars movies he appeared in, from best to worst. He graciously agreed to share his rankings.
Boyega's comments on Star Wars are not unexpected, as he has always been outspoken about his experiences with the franchise, much like Harrison Ford before him. It is clear that this extends to his opinions on the films he was involved in. Although Boyega insists that his ranking of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is respectful and that he appreciates all the films, his remarks throughout the years shed light on the factors that influenced his views on the Star Wars saga.
What Shaped John Boyega's Views Of The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy?
Regarding Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Boyega shares the common view that it is undoubtedly the most streamlined and least divisive film among the trilogy. As a result, many people tend to rank Star Wars: The Force Awakens higher than its two successors. However, when discussing the other films, Boyega's 2020 interview with GQ provides valuable insight into why the actor has his specific opinions on The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
Undoubtedly, the most significant criticism Boyega has expressed since leaving Star Wars is Disney's marketing of Finn as the main character in the sequel trilogy, only to somewhat sideline him in favor of Rey. Boyega stated: "[But] what I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side." This critique from Boyega is valid and leaves a negative impression on most viewers. The shifting of character prominence, though rooted in decisions made during The Force Awakens, became even more pronounced in The Last Jedi. This likely contributes to Boyega's ranking:
"When it comes to Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, you guys knew exactly what to do. But when it comes to Kelly Marie Tran and John Boyega, you know absolutely nothing. All the complexity and depth was given to Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley, let's face it. Everyone, including Daisy and Adam, knows this. I'm not revealing anything new."
While discussing The Rise of Skywalker, Boyega expressed his understanding towards J.J. Abrams, who faced a lot of criticism for his handling of the final film in the Skywalker Saga. Boyega stated, "Everyone should just leave my boy alone. He wasn't even supposed to come back and try to fix your mess." This comment clearly reflects Boyega's dissatisfaction with The Last Jedi, as he sees Abrams stepping in as the director for Episode IX to salvage what was set up in Episode VIII. Despite the controversy surrounding the sequel trilogy, it is undeniable that Boyega's concerns about Star Wars are justified and heavily influence his perspective on it.
