The 2024 Golden Globes is embroiled in scandal as its host, comedian Jo Koy, faces criticism for his inappropriate jokes. With the start of a new year, award season brings the Golden Globes, Emmys, and Grammy events to the forefront, leading up to the prestigious Oscars in March.
The Golden Globes brought TV and movie fans together to celebrate the best of both genres, but the evening took a turn when host Jo Koy was criticized by social media users for making demeaning and off-putting jokes, earning him the title of one of the worst award show hosts in history.
Twitter rips into Koy’s mean-spirited Golden Globe jokes
During his opening monologue, Koy joked about not being held to a high standard for his material, stating that he was brought on as host less than two weeks before the show and didn't receive the best material from the Golden Globes writers.
Koy explained, "I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at. Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! Want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You're kidding me, right? Some I wrote, some other people wrote."
One of the biggest missteps of the night occurred when the comedian unfairly poked fun at Greta Gerwig's billion-dollar film Barbie, wrongly comparing it to the blockbuster Oppenheimer.
Koy remarked, "‘Oppenheimer’ is derived from the Pulitzer Prize-winning 721-page book on the Manhattan Project, while ‘Barbie’ is centered on a plastic doll with large breasts," to minimal applause. He also cracked a joke about Taylor Swift and the NFL, which did not seem to sit well with the singer herself.
The celebrities in the room seemed to disapprove of Koy's Barbie remark, as Selena Gomez and Helen Mirren, who narrated Barbie, could be seen shaking their heads in the audience.

The Golden Globes may not have had the best host, but the actual show featured many wins for Succession, The Bear, and Killers of the Flower Moon's Lily Gladstone, who made history as the first Indigenous best actress winner in Golden Globes history.

Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z netizen, I am deeply disappointed and frustrated by Jo Koy's performance as the host of the 2024 Golden Globes. His jokes were not only unfunny but also offensive and disrespectful. It is unacceptable for a comedian to make light of serious issues such as sexism and body image. His attempt to pass off his sexist remarks as humor is not only insensitive but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes.
Furthermore, Koy's lack of preparation and professionalism is evident in his admission that he wrote some of the jokes himself and that he only had ten days to prepare. This is not an excuse for delivering subpar material. The Golden Globes is a prestigious event that deserves a host who takes it seriously and puts in the effort to deliver quality entertainment. Koy's performance has tarnished the reputation of the award show and left a negative impression on viewers.
