Following his disappointing hosting of the Golden Globes, Jo Koy has returned to stand-up comedy, where he appears to be blaming the celebrities in the audience.
Referring to his "whirlwind" week, the 52-year-old comedian joked during his set in St. Louis on Friday, January 12, "Lot a marshmallows, man. They’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft. I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we f–king laugh at ourselves?"
Koy made his debut as the host of the Golden Globes on January 7. During his opening monologue, he took shots at co-stars like Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, as well as nominees Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, and Taylor Swift. However, many of his jokes fell flat, leaving the audience and viewers unimpressed.
“I got this gig just 10 days ago. You want a perfect monologue? Give me a break,” Koy remarked during the broadcast. “I wrote some of these jokes, and those are the ones you’re laughing at.”
Koy, who later told the Los Angeles Times that it was a “rookie movie” to place blame on his writing team, does not regret any of his jokes.
Jo Koy expressed, "I have a feeling none of you watched it, and honestly, I'm glad." He continued, "Oh my God, it feels great to live in this country. We have the freedom to say what we want. Don't apologize for it. Speak your mind."
Variety reported that Koy never specifically referred to the Globes, but he expressed his enthusiasm for taking a break from the glitz and glamour of L.A.
"While the weather may be better in Hollywood, I'm thrilled to be caught in this blizzard. When it rains, it pours," he quipped, making light of the snowstorm that had hit Missouri that day. "Here in St. Louis, people actually listen and understand each other without the constant rivalry. It's ridiculous in L.A."
Koy’s appearance at the Globes has remained a hot topic for nearly a week after the show. Marvel star Simu Liu even made a subtle comment about Koy’s joke about Taylor Swift, 34, when he revealed his role as host for the People’s Choice Awards.
“Taylor Swift will not be criticized at the 2024 PCAs,” Liu, 34, posted on social media on Thursday, January 11, in reference to Koy’s remark that the Globes would feature fewer shots of Swift than NFL games.

Swift, a regular presence at her boyfriend Travis Kelce's Kansas City Chiefs games since September 2023, was visibly upset by the comment. Koy has since clarified that his joke was not intended to offend the pop star.
"The whole point of the joke was to poke fun at the NFL," Koy told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week. "The great thing about the Globes is that we don't need to cut away for ratings. What really bothers me is that I was just there to support Taylor, I support her and love her work. I have nieces for whom I've bought concert tickets. There was no ill intent behind that joke."
