Jenny McCarthy made her first appearance at the Oscars in 1997, confidently walking the red carpet in a backward dress. During an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark on Thursday, March 14, the 51-year-old actress shared her experience. McCarthy mentioned that she was invited to the Oscars as the 'It Girl' of the year, a tradition where they invite a new 'It Girl' annually. Despite only being invited once, she reflected on her journey from working at a Polish grocery store a year and a half prior to attending the prestigious event. McCarthy revealed that she was unaware that she wore a Valentino dress backward at the Oscars.
The floor-length dress had floral embroidery on the bodice that continued down the sheer skirt. The design was mirrored on both sides, which made it hard for McCarthy to tell which was the front.
To complete the look, she wore block heels and carried a silver evening bag. Her hair was styled in a half-up, half-down ‘do with bouncy curls. For a touch of glamour, she sported thin eyebrows (a popular trend at the time) and lined lips.

McCarthy shared with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos that Valentino Garavani personally corrected her when she mistakenly wore one of his designs backwards. After thanking him for letting her "borrow" the outfit, Valentino pointed out the mistake by saying, "You're wearing it backwards." McCarthy humorously added, "It doesn't surprise me, I was still smelling like Polish sausage from my deli job."
Ripa, 53, reassured McCarthy that she actually wore the dress correctly, despite Valentino's comment.
McCarthy had shared with Us about the incident, describing it as "embarrassing." In 2014, she recalled feeling like she wanted to disappear, saying, "I just remember dying a little bit." As a result, she made it clear that she would not allow Valentino to dress her again.
