Jay Leno's wife, Mavis Leno, is currently struggling with dementia and there are times when she doesn't recognize her husband or even remember her own date of birth. In court papers revealed by We on Tuesday, April 2, Mavis' lawyer, Ronald Ostrin, mentioned that at the age of 77, she is facing challenges with her memory.
Ostrin mentioned that Mavis has been diagnosed with "advanced dementia" and experiences a lot of disorientation. She often thinks about her late parents, especially her mother who passed away around 20 years ago.
However, despite her struggles, Ostrin pointed out that Mavis still has a delightful personality and is able to communicate. He suggested that Jay, aged 73, should be appointed as the conservator of Mavis' estate, as she agrees to this arrangement.
Jay filed for a conservatorship of Mavis in January to establish a living trust for her in case of his passing. Ostrin stated in a recent filing that Jay's actions were essential for their protection.
Ostrin also mentioned that Jay and Mavis, who have been married since 1980, share a loving and supportive relationship. Mavis sees Jay as her protector and someone she trusts.
He continued, "Estate planning is essential for everyone, but it's crucial to have it in place before it's needed."
Jay has also talked about the special bond he shares with Mavis.
During a September 2023 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the former Tonight Show host shared some relationship advice. He mentioned that it's important to marry someone who is normal. He also talked about how some guys focus only on the physical aspect of a relationship, saying that even if the sex is great, if the person is crazy, you'll have to deal with that for the majority of the time.
He emphasized the importance of marrying someone who reflects the person you aspire to be, someone who is kind and doesn't have the same faults as you. He mentioned that this approach has worked well for him, as he feels he married the perfect person.
In 1976, Mavis and Jay first crossed paths when Mavis attended one of Jay's comedy shows at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.
During the show, they were seated front row center, just a few feet away from Jay. Reflecting on the moment in 2014, Mavis shared with the Los Angeles Times, "I had to excuse myself to use the restroom. Little did I know, that area was where the comedians hung out. When I returned, Jay approached me and asked, 'Are you the girl in front?' to which I replied, 'Yes, that was me.'"
During the interview, Jay confessed that their engagement wasn't the most romantic moment for the couple.
He humorously mentioned that he had an insurance policy and felt that getting married was a logical decision to ensure his girlfriend's coverage in case of any unfortunate event. He joked, "Not the most romantic. Mavis didn’t even get an engagement ring until [2004]."
Mavis chimed in to say they “just bought a house” together instead of a ring.
