Hernan Reyes actor Joaquim de Almeida, who appeared in the film Fast Five, recently shared that he and his on-screen son, Jason Momoa, used to playfully tease each other on the set of Fast X about their lack of resemblance. Fast X, which received mixed reviews when it was released earlier this year, features Vin Diesel's Dom Toretto going up against Momoa's character, Dante, who seeks revenge for the death of his father in the events of Fast Five in 2011. Why Jason Momoa's Casting Still Works In Fast X
When my agent informed me that they wanted me to return for Fast X, I was caught off guard. I exclaimed, "What? They want me back? I'm deceased!" However, my agent revealed that there would be flashbacks in the film. Intrigued, I read the script and eagerly asked, "Who will portray my son?" To my surprise, it was none other than Jason Momoa. In disbelief, I exclaimed, "Jason Momoa?! How is that even possible?" During the filming, I would often jest with Jason, teasing him about the extraordinary height of his mother. Those moments were quite amusing. After all, how does one have a son that gigantic? [Laughs]
Initially focused on small-time criminals and street racing, the franchise has drastically evolved over the course of two decades. The current films bear little semblance to their predecessors, as they tackle high-stakes, apocalyptic scenarios and showcase mind-boggling car stunts. In terms of automotive prowess, Dom has transformed into a veritable superhero, surpassing all expectations.
With the laws of physics disregarded and action sequences fully embracing the fantastical, including elements of science fiction, the dissimilarities between Almeida and Momoa are not a deal-breaker. Momoa's flamboyant portrayal of Dante is indeed one of the highlights of Fast X. Furthermore, Momoa's casting is not the first time the Fast & Furious franchise has asked audiences to accept a casting choice that is clearly far-fetched.
In F9, John Cena is introduced as Diesel's on-screen brother, which could be argued as even more absurd than the paternal bond between Momoa and Almeida. The franchise prioritizes talented or high-profile actors for their roles, rather than solely focusing on physical resemblance. This approach is not necessarily a negative. While the lack of resemblance between certain family members in Fast X and other films may challenge some viewers' suspension of disbelief, it aligns with the franchise's overall inclination towards more fantastical elements.
