Jason Kelce won't be too tough on his brother, Travis Kelce, as he takes on his new role as a commentator for ESPN's Monday Night Countdown. However, there might be some playful teasing involved.
During their "New Heights" podcast, Travis, who is 34 years old, asked Jason, who is 36, if he should brace himself for some teasing from his older brother. Travis wondered if Jason would be more critical of him compared to others, jokingly asking, "Will you be more willing to tease me because we're family?"
Jason made sure to let Travis know that he wouldn't be treated unfairly, saying, "No, I wouldn't do that to you. If you drop a pass, I'm not going to go out of my way to do that."
However, Travis shouldn't think he's off the hook just yet. Jason gave him a heads up that if he does any "silly" endzone dances, he can definitely expect some good-natured teasing.
Jason is thrilled about his new post-retirement opportunity, describing it as an honor to work alongside a distinguished group of analysts. He reminisced about how football was a significant part of everyone's night growing up. Now, he is excited to join a team of incredibly talented individuals with not only great expertise but also wonderful personalities, making it a promising experience.
Since a report on March 27 by The Athletic, Jason has been linked to ESPN as they showed interest in him. Other networks such as CBS, NBC, and Prime Video were also reportedly pursuing him at that time. Ultimately, ESPN officially announced Jason's multiyear deal on Tuesday, May 14. As a former center, he will be taking over for fellow NFL alum Robert Griffin III on Monday Night Countdown.
The athlete, who retired from the Philadelphia Eagles in March after 13 seasons, is now preparing for a new career in sports commentary. Along with 25 current and former players, Jason participated in the NFL’s Broadcasting and Media Workshop, a three-day program where players practiced calling games on radio and television and learned about being a studio analyst.
Jason shared with the Associated Press that this experience is all new to him and has given him a greater appreciation for the work. He mentioned how challenging it is to provide live commentary, react to what just happened, and come up with clever and meaningful insights.
Jason found the workshop very informative, but he struggled with remembering the names of the players. He mentioned that it is easier to remember names when you are relaxed on the couch or when you have heard the name multiple times. Some names are particularly challenging to recall on the spot.
Jason will make his Monday Night Football debut on September 9 when the San Francisco 49ers play the New York Jets.
