Ivan Toney Slams Public Release of Gambling Investigation as Malicious

Ivan Toney, Brentford striker, faces an eight-month ban from football, a £50,000 fine, and inability to train until September, after admitting to 232 breaches of the Football Association's betting rules The investigation into his gambling breaches was made public in a 'spiteful' way, according to Toney

Ivan Toney has expressed his belief that the Football Association's handling of his gambling violations was maliciously publicized. Following his admission of 232 breaches of the FA's betting regulations over a span of four years, the Brentford striker was fined £50,000 and prohibited from participating in any football-related activities until January 17.

Toney's past betting activities were brought to light just before Gareth Southgate announced his England squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. During an interview on the Kick Game YouTube channel, Toney shared that although he is currently serving a long punishment, not being able to participate in his first World Cup outweighs it all.

"After missing out on the World Cup, just before the England camp, people tried to break me down," said the 27-year-old. "It felt like they wanted me to leave so I wouldn't be able to go away with the team. However, they decided to wait until the end of the season to make their move. I found it to be a bit spiteful, but I have to accept it and move forward."

The absence from the World Cup, which is a dream for everyone, felt like a greater punishment to me, despite the fact that I'm going to miss eight months of football. However, I have faith in my abilities and I'm aiming to participate in the next one. Until September, Toney is prohibited from practicing with Brentford, and he will not be able to play again until January 2024 when his suspension expires.

He has made a promise to come back stronger and better, without seeking any sympathy for his previous actions. He expressed his appreciation for the club's support and assistance, along with the numerous messages from fellow footballers. Overall, he believes in the positive influence of the sport.

"I don't want anyone to pity me for my current situation. I accept the punishment and will move forward.

My focus will be on training and returning to the league as a stronger and more determined player. It will be a force to be reckoned with."

Acknowledging his own struggles with gambling addiction, Toney pointed out the double standards prevalent in football when it comes to sponsorship from betting companies. He stated that it is a common occurrence for football teams to be sponsored by gambling companies, which is a cause for concern.

The sport should definitely take more responsibility in addressing its connection with gambling. It's true that some people may have a certain perception of me, but those who truly know me understand my character and values. It's worth considering that a large number of football teams have sponsorship deals with gambling companies, which highlights the need for the sport to address this issue.

There should be more support available for individuals who struggle with gambling and are unable to follow the rules of not betting. At an appropriate time, I will address various issues and provide clarification on certain matters. However, that time is not now.
