The families of four hostages held in Gaza have been informed by the Israel Defense Forces that they are no longer alive.
The IDF has communicated to the families of Chaim Peri, Yoram Metzger, Amiram Cooper, and Nadav Popplewell, who were abducted to Gaza on October 7, that their bodies are in the possession of the Hamas terrorist organization.
The IDF has stated that the four hostages have been declared deceased following confirmation from a Ministry of Health expert committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Religious Services and the Chief Rabbi of Israel. The decision was made based on intelligence.
The IDF is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the hostages while they were in captivity under Hamas.
The Chief spokesperson for the IDF, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, shared that the loved ones of the four individuals were tragically killed a few months ago while being held captive by Hamas in Gaza. Their bodies are still being held by Hamas. It is believed that they were killed together in the area of Khan Younis during an operation against Hamas.
In May, Hamas claimed that Popplewell, who was an Israeli-British citizen, had passed away from injuries sustained during a strike by Israeli fighter jets on the location where he was being held captive over a month prior.
CNN is not able to independently verify this claim made by Hamas.
The IDF says it uses a “a wide variety of methods to gather information about the hostages who remain in the Gaza Strip.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.

It is imperative that all parties involved cooperate fully in this process to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The continued detention of the hostages' bodies by Hamas is a callous act that prolongs the anguish of their loved ones. The international community must pressure Hamas to release these bodies so that the families can finally lay their loved ones to rest with dignity.
