Three Israeli hostages were mistakenly identified as a threat and shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza during combat in Shejaiya, the Israel Defense Forces reported. IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari revealed the tragic incident in a news briefing on Friday.
"Following searches and inspections in the vicinity of the incident, there was concern about the identities of the deceased individuals," Hagari explained. "Their remains were brought to Israeli territory for evaluation, and it was subsequently verified that they were three Israeli hostages."
The hostages have been named as Yotam Haim, who was abducted by Hamas from Kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7, Samer Talalka, who was also taken from Kibbutz Nir Am on the same day, and another male captive whose family preferred not to have his name disclosed.
The IDF began reviewing the incident immediately, Hagari said.
Hagari said the IDF believes the three men either escaped their captors or had been "left behind" because of the fighting in the area.
Hagari stated that the military is still "reviewing the details," and assured that there will be "full transparency about all the details of this incident," when asked if the three men raised their hands or shouted in Hebrew. Israeli forces have engaged in close-quarters combat with Hamas militants in various areas of Gaza, including Shejaiya and Jabalya in the north, as well as Khan Younis in the south.
Hagari reported that the incident took place in an area where Israeli troops had been engaging with numerous terrorists. He mentioned that the soldiers had encountered attacks where fighters attempted to deceive them and set traps, as well as suicide terrorists who were unarmed. Following the mistaken shooting of hostages, Hagari stated that Israeli forces then encountered a group of fighters in close proximity.
The fatal shooting is still being investigated as Israel gathers information, according to Hagari. He also mentioned that the IDF has quickly shared important instructions with all forces in the Gaza Strip about identifying hostages in battle zones. Jonathan Conricus, another IDF spokesman, told CNN that Israeli soldiers have been instructed to use extra caution when approaching individuals in civilian attire following the accidental killing of three hostages in Gaza.
Conricus mentioned that a number of the fighters targeting IDF forces in Gaza had been disguised in civilian attire.
Benny Gantz, an important member of Israel's war cabinet, expressed his sorrow upon hearing about the shooting.
"I urge everyone to embrace the families, as all the people of Israel are grieving with you," Gantz said in a statement on X.
"The sorrow that comes with this tragic event has only intensified the pain of the ongoing campaign," he added.
