Cruel Summer finally revealed who killed Luke during the season 2 finale — taking several surprising swings in the process.
During the Monday, July 31 episode, Brent (played by Braeden De La Garza) confessed to Megan (played by Sadie Stanley) that he was responsible for Luke's death. Through flashbacks, viewers saw how Brent picked up Luke (played by Griffin Gluck) at the dock and the two siblings argued about their mother's death, which was a result of her alcoholism.
In an attempt to avoid the truth, Brent pushed Luke, causing him to hit his head on a railing and fall into the water. The oldest Chambers child then informed their father, Steve (played by Paul Adelstein), about the incident, and initially, they covered up the crime.
The situation took a different turn when Luke's body was found, and Megan and Isabella (played by Lexi Underwood) became suspects. Isabella provided the police with a censored tape, depicting only Megan with a gun in the cabin on the night of Luke's murder. However, their plan to frame Megan failed as Brent confessed to the crime.
In the aftermath, Megan tried to come to terms with Luke's death while Isabella disappeared without a trace. The episode ended with a shocking revelation in Cruel Summer, as Megan discovered footage showing Luke alive after his fall. It was revealed that he washed up on the shore, where Isabella drowned him.

In the finale, viewers discovered that Megan and Isabella had betrayed each other as part of a scheme. However, the two former friends had different ideas about their next steps. Isabella believed she could mend their relationship, while Megan held Isabella responsible for the events involving Luke.
Following her altercation with Isabella, Megan was arrested on false charges orchestrated by the newcomer. Fortunately, Brent's confession led to her release from prison. With the assistance of Ned (played by Ben Cotton), Megan began crafting her plans for the future.
The final moments of the finale showed Megan realizing there was a camera that pointed at the dock. She hacked into the footage and saw Isabella drowning Luke in the lake.

Isabella LaRue
Despite the turbulent times she experienced in Chatham, Isabella held onto a glimmer of hope for her friendship with Megan. However, Megan decided to abruptly end their connection, triggering a series of events that ultimately resulted in the police obtaining the tape from their night in the cabin. Before Megan had a chance to speak with Isabella again, she vanished mysteriously, only to resurface aboard a plane headed towards an unknown destination.
During her journey, Isabella opened up to a fellow traveler, offering a revised version of her friendship with Megan, effectively rewriting their shared history. This conversation served as a reflection of Isabella's previous narration of her relationship with Lisa, which concluded with Lisa's tragic demise.
Cruel Summer unveiled in the season's final scene that it was Isabella who was ultimately responsible for Luke's demise. Upon departing from the cabin, Isabella found herself at the dock where she witnessed Luke's lifeless body being carried ashore by the waves. While she had the power to rescue him, she instead made the malevolent choice to drown him.

Luke Chambers
In the flashbacks of the night he died, Luke acknowledged accountability for his actions. He confessed to grappling with his father's accusation of him being responsible for his mother's death while in the car. Luke, however, decided to no longer feign guilt for supposedly distracting his mother. He revealed to Brent that the accident occurred because their mother was driving under the influence.
Following Brent's departure from the dock, presuming his younger brother had drowned, Luke reappeared on shore, having survived. Isabella witnessed his plea for assistance but tragically ended his life herself.

Brent Chambers
Upon receiving Luke's message, Brent appeared at the dock and immediately took responsibility for Luke's demise. He confessed to their father about the altercation that resulted in Luke being submerged in the lake. Steve, on the other hand, concealed the incident and refrained from reporting Brent.
The decision weighed on Brent and he owned to the crime when Megan was arrested.

Steve Chambers
In Cruel Summer, Steve was depicted as a person who would go to any lengths to maintain his family's reputation. The conclusion of the story revealed that not even the tragic death of his son could compel Steve to choose the honorable path. Instead, he decided to conceal Brent's involvement and deceitfully feigned concern over Luke's sudden disappearance.
However, Brent's perspective towards Steve dramatically changed when he confronted his father about their mother's demise. Steve stubbornly refused to acknowledge the truth, prompting Brent to take matters into his own hands. As a result, Steve, the head of the Chambers family, was apprehended and charged as an accomplice to Luke's murder.

Debbie Landry
During season 2, Megan and Isabella received unwavering support from Debbie (KaDee Strickland). In the finale, Megan revealed that Debbie had successfully entered remission from her illness. However, despite this uplifting news, Debbie did not make an appearance in the final episode.
