The love triangle in My Life With the Walter Boys is reminiscent of The Vampire Diaries, according to author Ali Novak. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she revealed that the relationship dynamics were inspired by Damon and Stefan Salvatore from the popular TV show. Novak expressed the appeal of love triangles in young adult books and the influence of The Vampire Diaries on the genre.
The CW's TVD, which had an eight-season run, featured a central love triangle involving Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and vampire brothers Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley). Meanwhile, My Life With the Walter Boys also follows its own love triangle, minus any supernatural elements. The Netflix adaptation was released on Thursday, December 7, closely following Novak’s Wattpad novel of the same name.
In the narrative, Jackie Howard, a high school student (Nikki Rodriguez), makes a move from her glamorous life in New York City following the tragic death of her family in a car accident. Jackie then resides with her mother’s college best friend, Katherine (portrayed by Sarah Rafferty from Suits), and her expansive family which consists of husband George (played by Marc Blucas from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and their eight children. Among Katherine and George’s sons, Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Alex (Ashby Gentry), both secretly carry affection for Jackie, who eventually finds herself reciprocating feelings for both of them.
Nikki Rodriguez portrays Jackie and Ashby Gentry plays Alex in season 1 of My Life With the Walter Boys. Jackie navigates her attraction to the two brothers, Cole and Alex, who have vastly different personalities - Cole is the All-American, football-playing small-town golden boy, while Alex is the shy, bookish type.
Novak told EW that it was important to ensure both boys were equally important to the story and that there is more to it than just the love triangle. While Jackie will choose between the two boys by the end of the first season, book fans should not expect the same ending onscreen.

"We need to make some adjustments to adapt it into a TV series," said showrunner Melanie Halsall in an interview with EW. "The development of relationships, particularly Jackie and Alex's, will be slightly different from the book. And the ending will bring a surprising twist, diverging from the book. I hope this offers both fans of the book and new viewers a delightful surprise."
