The star of The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev, recently shared that she almost didn't take the opportunity to be a part of the show. Dobrev, famous for her role as Elena Gilbert, the main character of The Vampire Diaries for the first six seasons, also portrayed other versions of Elena throughout the series. One of her most notable performances was as the captivatingly antagonistic Katherine Pierce.
During an interview on Live with Kelly & Mark, while promoting her new comedy movie The-Outlaws on Netflix, Dobrev revealed that she had to make a decision between auditioning for The Vampire Diaries or the HBO period crime drama Boardwalk Empire. Dobrev explained that Boardwalk Empire had a nudity clause in the contract, which meant she might have been required to do a nude scene at some point. This made her decision easier, as at the age of 19, she wasn't comfortable with that clause. Here is Dobrev's quote (via The Sun):
Dobrev's Turn In Vampire Diaries Was Excellent
I had to make a choice between auditioning for Vampire Diaries and Boardwalk Empire, but unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to test for both. It was a difficult decision to make, as I didn't know which one to choose. Ultimately, the deciding factor came down to the fact that I was only 19 or 20 at the time, and Boardwalk Empire required me to sign a nudity clause. Strangely, this clause wasn't even mentioned in the script. It was more like a disclaimer that at some point, there might be a requirement for nudity in the show, and I would have to comply.Despite losing momentum throughout its run, The Vampire Diaries made a strong impact right from the start. A significant factor was Dobrev's impressive portrayal as both the protagonist and antagonist. A notable instance occurred in the final episode of season 1, where Katherine orchestrated a dramatic entrance into Elena's life. Being a vampire and Elena's major doppelgänger, Katherine managed to deceive her way into Elena's residence and caused widespread chaos. This chaotic sequence set the tone for the remaining supernatural drama, leaving viewers constantly anticipating the unexpected.
Dobrev's portrayal of dual roles had its consequences. Despite their identical appearance, the two characters had notable differences in clothing, dialogue, and movement. Besides mastering these distinctions, Dobrev also had to share scenes with herself, causing concern for The CW about overworking the lead star. Additionally, Katherine's character was eventually killed off for a few seasons due to these challenges.
