Iman Vellani declines to view this Marvel film

Marvel star Iman Vellani reveals her aversion to Dark Phoenix, explaining her decision not to watch the movie in a recent interview

Marvel star Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala Khan in the MCU, is a true Marvel superfan. Going from watching the Marvel movies to starring in them, she is well-versed in the comics and knows her stuff. However, there's one Marvel movie she can't bring herself to watch.

In her most recent appearance in the MCU, Vellani showcases a fantastic blend of these two qualities in The Marvels. Our enthusiastic four-star review describes the film as an absolute blast, emphasizing its goofiness, enjoyable nature, and empowering representation of women.

Even when not onscreen, Vellani reaffirms her connection to the Marvel universe, although she does have one exception when it comes to watching a specific movie.

Marvel star Iman Vellani refuses to watch Dark Phoenix

In a recent interview with New Rockstars, Marvel Star Iman Vellani revealed that she refuses to watch Dark Phoenix.

During the interview, Vellani asked if she had any theories on which X-Men universe Teyonah Parris’ character Monica Rambeau ended up in during the post-credits scene.

Her response? "Any X-Men universe is fine – that's not true! I still refuse to watch Dark Phoenix."

Despite potentially appearing as a controversial viewpoint to those who are not fans of Marvel, the statistics speak for themselves. At the current moment, X-Men: Dark Phoenix holds a Tomatometer rating of 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have labeled it one of the most subpar comic book films of the 21st century.

Joe Morgenstern from The Wall Street Journal noted that while the spectacle of Dark Phoenix can be entertaining, it eventually becomes saturated with digital wizardry and transforms into a predictable barrage of explosions, collisions, and swirling force fields. Despite this criticism, the movie garnered a decent audience score of 64% and achieved a box office gross of $250 million in the US in 2019.

"Everyone seems to be excessively upset in the comments, agreeing with her assessment that Dark Phoenix was worse than Last Stand," one fan commented on X/Twitter in response to the interview clip.

"While Ms Marvel may not earn an Emmy, it is commendable to see the dedication of the actors and the effort put in by the production team. Dark Phoenix, on the other hand, was a disappointing conclusion to the new X-Men universe, surpassing even the low standards set by Last Stand," another individual shared their perspective.

“They were flexing on us with that CGI,” Vellani added about X-Men cameo of Beast during the interview.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I have mixed feelings about Iman Vellani's decision not to watch Dark Phoenix. On the one hand, I understand her reasoning. Dark Phoenix was not well-received by critics and audiences alike, and it's understandable that Vellani would not want to watch a movie that has been widely regarded as a disappointment. On the other hand, I think it's a shame that Vellani is missing out on a movie that, despite its flaws, still has some redeeming qualities.

Dark Phoenix is a visually stunning film with some great action sequences. The cast is also very talented, and they do their best with the material they're given. Ultimately, I think Vellani is doing herself a disservice by not giving Dark Phoenix a chance. While it may not be the best Marvel movie, it's still a fun and entertaining film that is worth watching.
