As James Gunn was in the process of casting for the first DC Universe film, Superman: Legacy, the actors went on strike. Despite this setback, Gunn had already selected David Corenswet as the DCU's Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Furthermore, Gunn had also cast actors for other DC characters set to appear in Superman: Legacy, such as Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Mr. Terrific, and Metamorpho. However, the role of the film's villain has yet to be filled.

Esposito recently revealed at Comic-Con Panama that he has been chatting with James Gunn about the potential of appearing in a DC film. He expressed uncertainty about the outcome, but the discussions likely took place before the strikes. With the casting process for the DCU's Batman film progressing slowly, it is possible that Esposito's role was intended for Superman: Legacy.

According to a video posted by a user, Esposito is aware that fans think he would be a great fit for X-Men's Professor X, Magneto, and Mr. Freeze. However, he mentioned a preference for playing a superhero over a villain, eliminating the chances of him portraying Magneto or Mr. Freeze. Additionally, Esposito seems confident that he will eventually land a role in either a Marvel or DC project.

Esposito is known for his portrayal of cold villains like Gus Fring in Breaking Bad, Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, Stan Edgar in The Boys, and Anton Castillo in Far Cry 6. However, it seems that he is seeking a change of pace by potentially joining either Marvel or DC. Many fans are excited about this possibility. While some fans believe he would excel as Lex Luthor, Brainiac, or Freeze, there is a significant amount of fan casting him as Martian Manhunter, a hero character.
