Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan recently shared his perspective on the ongoing debate surrounding whether Better Call Saul surpasses its predecessor. With the conclusion of Better Call Saul in late 2022, fans have been comparing the spinoff's distinct ending to the explosive finale of Breaking Bad. Rather than opting for a similar dramatic climax, the spinoff took a different approach, offering a more subdued and surprisingly optimistic conclusion that focused on the main character accepting responsibility for his actions.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Gilligan addressed the ongoing debate, acknowledging that some individuals have expressed a preference for Better Call Saul over Breaking Bad. Despite initially expecting to be bothered by this sentiment, Gilligan explained why he no longer feels that way.
Half of the individuals I encounter, and possibly even more than half, express a greater enthusiasm for 'Saul' compared to 'Breaking Bad. Initially, I believed I would detest hearing such opinions; however, surprisingly, I do not. The valuable lesson here is to refrain from overanalyzing situations.
Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul Were Two Very Different Shows
While both shows were created by the same people, the spinoff had a different concept compared to the original series. Breaking Bad was known for its intense and action-packed moments, especially towards the end, featuring shootouts and memorable action sequences. It primarily focused on the drug trade and portrayed some truly terrifying villains. Better Call Saul did have some similarities at times, but overall, it took a more deliberate approach and emphasized the development of its characters.
The spinoff is often regarded as superior by some, adding to the ongoing debate surrounding the two shows. Breaking Bad, although it received awards recognition that the spinoff never quite achieved, had a consistently high level of operation. On the other hand, Better Call Saul took a slower approach, building up to spectacular eruptions. Despite numerous Emmy nominations, the spinoff has yet to secure a win, but the upcoming ceremony presents a final opportunity to rectify that, although it faces tough competition from shows like Succession, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us.
