Highlights
Amidst a flurry of disapproval and disapproving comments, The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival, a rather contentious replica of The Last of Us, has been eradicated from the Nintendo Switch eShop.
The game garnered considerable attention due to its clear effort to mimic various aspects of The Last of Us, including its title, storyline, and character designs, resulting in scornful ridicule from both fans and critics.
The eShop's decision to remove The Last Hope can be attributed to a probable copyright dispute initiated by Sony Interactive, as indicated by the removal of the game's trailer from YouTube, coupled with a confirmation message acknowledging a copyright claim from Sony.
A controversial software that appeared to be attempting to mimic The Last of Us has been removed from the Nintendo Switch eShop. The game, known as The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival, gained attention for being a poor imitation of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us.
The Last Hope was released on the Switch online store in July, which resulted in dismissive ridicule from both fans and critics. Many observers pointed out that the game's title, concept, character designs, and more were blatant imitations of the highly acclaimed 2013 classic, The Last of Us. Additionally, the store page for The Last Hope was incorrectly categorized as a first-person shooter, despite clearly having a third-person perspective. This prompted many to view it as just another example of fraudulent practices within the video game industry.
After facing widespread criticism, The Last Hope has been taken down from the Nintendo Switch eShop in both the US and UK. Nintendo Life's investigation confirmed its removal. The game's disappearance, along with the deletion of its trailer on YouTube, strongly suggests that Sony Interactive issued a copyright claim. This is not surprising as big gaming companies often issue copyright claims for offenses much smaller than what The Last Hope attempted.
Before its removal from the eShop, The Last Hope received harsh criticism from reviewers. Videos, like the one mentioned above, showcased the game's sloppy, lazy, and practically non-functional nature. Although well-executed clones of popular franchises like Grand Theft Auto can become beloved games in their own right, The Last Hope failed to meet those standards. The overwhelmingly negative response indicates that the game fell far short of expectations.
The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival shares similarities with the abundance of low-quality games that were released on Steam in the past. It is surprising that Nintendo approved the game for their eShop platform, but it is not unexpected that it has been removed. Unlike The Last of Us, which has maintained a strong fanbase even after a decade, it is unlikely that anyone will feel a loss over the absence of The Last Hope now.
Furthermore, The Last of Us Part 1 is currently accessible on PC and PS5.
