We are making predictions for the potential nominees at the 2023 Emmys, and it seems that HBO is poised to dominate in various categories.
HBO's flagship show Succession concluded its fourth and final season in May. Despite receiving an impressive 48 Emmy nominations and winning 13 awards overall, only three of those wins were for acting. Matthew Macfadyen won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series trophy in 2022 for his portrayal of Tom Wambsgans, while Jeremy Strong emerged victorious in 2020 as the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Kendall Roy. In the same year, Cherry Jones earned recognition, winning the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Nan Pierce.
This year, the show is expected to receive numerous acting nominations in all categories, in addition to its Outstanding Drama Series nomination, thanks to the exceptional performances of the cast. The lead actor competition is especially competitive, with Kieran Culkin, who plays the youngest sibling Roman Roy, moving from a supporting role to join Brian Cox and Strong, who portray the Roy family patriarch. Alexander Skarsgård and Nicholas Braun, who portray tech titan Lukas Matsson and Cousin Greg respectively, may also receive nominations in the supporting category alongside Macfadyen.
On the other hand, Sarah Snook is a strong contender in the lead actress category for her complex portrayal of Shiv Roy. Some of the show's guest stars, including Harriet Walter, Hiam Abbess, and James Cromwell, also have a chance at receiving nominations.
While other shows like Ted Lasso, Barry, Better Call Saul, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will be recognized for their final seasons, there are also some impressive newcomers on the scene. The Last of Us, an HBO sci-fi adventure series that premiered in January, has garnered praise as the greatest video game adaptation ever produced and has been hailed as one of the top TV shows of the year.
At the heart of the story is Pedro Pascal, who delivers a nuanced performance as the grieving father, Joel. Pascal's performance is likely to earn him a well-deserved nomination, along with his co-star Bella Ramsey, whose portrayal of Ellie provides a moving and hilarious contrast to Pascal's character and the show's overall darker tone.

The popular HBO anthology series, The White Lotus, submitted in the Outstanding Limited Series/Anthology category for 2022, will now be competing in the Outstanding Drama Series category for its second season. In addition to the show's overall recognition, its talented stars Meghann Fahy, Aubrey Plaza, and Jennifer Coolidge, who all won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in 2022, have a strong chance of winning again.
HBO's presence in the comedy categories has diminished, but Bill Hader's Barry, which concluded its fourth and final season in June, is a top contender, alongside successful Apple TV+ shows Shrinking and Ted Lasso. FX's The Bear, led by Jeremy Allen White, who received both a Golden Globe and SAG Award earlier this year, is also expected to receive acknowledgement.
The Bear is expected to dominate the 2024 Emmys, surpassing the awards ceremony. Season 2, which debuted in June, received a flawless rating on Rotten Tomatoes and boasts an impressive lineup of A-list guest stars, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Poulter, John Mulaney, Sarah Paulson, and the return of John Bernthal.
