The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, a 2015 HBO documentary miniseries, delves into the life of convicted murderer Robert Durst, a New York real estate heir. It was crafted by Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier, with Jarecki taking the helm as director. Now, nearly a decade later, HBO has announced that the docuseries will make a comeback in 2024.
While creating the initial installment of The Jinx, Jarecki spent over 20 hours with Durst, spanning several years. This was particularly noteworthy, as Durst had never before collaborated with any journalist. Interestingly, as The Jinx aired, it gained significant attention when Durst was arrested for first-degree murder, specifically related to the demise of his friend Susan Berman. This arrest occurred the day before the series finale aired, and Durst shockingly admitted, "Killed them all, of course."
In a shocking turn of events, Robert Durst was apprehended at a New Orleans hotel lobby, thanks to the filmmakers' uncovering of compelling evidence. Over the course of the next eight years, the filmmakers embarked on a relentless investigation, unearthing concealed material and even tapping into Durst's secretive prison conversations. Additionally, the upcoming series features never-before-seen interviews with individuals who have chosen to step forward at this pivotal moment. Returning as director and executive producer are Jarecki and Start-Pontier, respectively.
Reflecting the filmmakers' decades-long pursuit of Durst, the show successfully unraveled one of New York's most infamous unsolved crimes, laying bare previously concealed information. Following its 2015 release, The Jinx received praise and recognition, gaining six Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Notably, it emerged victorious in the categories of Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming.
