Harvard President Claudine Gay is expected to receive a decision on Tuesday, and it may bring relief. University officials could not be reached for immediate comment. The Harvard Corporation, including the board of overseers, is expected to announce the decision on Tuesday morning after the conclusion of Monday's meeting, according to the school newspaper.
CNN has reported that The Harvard Corporation was in the process of finalizing a statement regarding Gay, which was anticipated to be announced on Tuesday.
Gay has faced increased scrutiny following her controversial testimony on antisemitism at American universities before a House committee last week. Subsequently, UPenn President Liz Magill, who testified with Gay, resigned, and influential donors and politicians have called for Gay's dismissal.
However, the overwhelming support for Gay Monday from hundreds of faculty and alumni may have influenced the board's decision in her favor.
A petition in support of Gay has been signed by over 700 Harvard faculty members. The 2023 Harvard annual report shows that the university has a total of 1,068 tenured faculty and 403 tenure-track faculty.
The Executive Committee of Harvard University's Alumni Association announced on Monday their full support for Gay. Additionally, more than 800 Black alumni have expressed their unwavering support for Gay and her mission to create a more inclusive community at our alma mater, while also upholding the important principles of free thought and free speech.
