Gollum Rises in Sales Charts: The Lord of the Rings Phenomenon Continues

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum defies odds with strong sales figures despite a challenging launch Fans flock to experience the thrilling journey of one of Middle Earth's most iconic characters

Despite receiving negative reviews, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum managed to make its way into UK's boxed game sales figures from last week, following its release. It seems that despite the game's disastrous reception, a decent number of people still decided to give it a try.

Gollum, a game based on The Lord of the Rings franchise, managed to secure the sixth spot on the list of most sold games in the United Kingdom during the week ending on May 27. Despite facing tough competition from popular titles like Zelda, FIFA 23, Hogwarts Legacy, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the game still managed to perform reasonably well. Interestingly, the game saw 70% of its sales on the PS5, while only 20% were on Xbox. However, it should be noted that these figures only represent physical sales in the UK, and the absence of physical media for Xbox Series S may have affected the sales numbers.

The launch of the new game set in the beloved Lord of the Rings property was marred by issues, leading to an apology from the Gollum developers and lower sales than expected. However, with the LotR name and the promise of future patches to address current bugs, there is hope that sales will eventually increase. Despite this setback, Daedelic has announced that they are already working on a second game set in Middle-Earth, with the German government providing €2 million in funding. While details about the upcoming game are scarce, it appears to be centered around wizards and is currently being developed under the codename "It's Magic," with no official release date announced yet.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. A Switch version is in development.
