Goku's promise to his wife Chi-Chi, made way back in DBZ, has been misunderstood by many fans who assumed it was broken. However, in Dragon Ball Super, Goku has made a conscious effort to uphold his commitment, proving critics wrong and contradicting the notion that he is a neglectful husband and father.
In Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, specifically in chapter 366, Chi-Chi allows Goku to train Gohan in order to defeat Cell, under the condition that this would be the last time he would interfere with Gohan's education and that he would find a job eventually. Goku immediately agrees to these terms. It is important to emphasize that throughout the remainder of DBZ and even in the latest chapters of Dragon Ball Super, Goku has never once disrupted Gohan's studies or neglected his own employment responsibilities.
Goku Had Many Opportunities to Break His Promise (And Didn't)
During Goku's time in DBZ after Cell's defeat, he respects his promise and refrains from interfering with Gohan's studies or helping him secure a job. However, when Goku is granted a day on Earth, he approaches Chi-Chi to seek permission for Gohan to participate in an upcoming tournament, despite the potential interference with his studies. Chi-Chi agrees, motivated by the prospect of winning money. Goku later joins Gohan's Zeta Sword training with Elder Kai, as a participant rather than the initiator. As the search for warriors for the Tournament of Power commences in Dragon Ball Super, the idea of recruiting Gohan arises multiple times, but Goku consistently states that Gohan is uninterested. Ultimately, it is Piccolo who takes on the responsibility of selecting and training Gohan.
Regarding Goku's employment, he holds jobs periodically throughout Dragon Ball Super. However, he often quits when he accidentally comes across a significant amount of cash, which fulfills Chi-Chi's desire for him to earn a living. In the early stages of the manga, Hercule gifts Goku 100 million Zeni, considering it rightfully his. In chapter 27, Goku turns in bandits who attempted to rob him during one of his jobs and receives a substantial reward. Goku's trip to planet Cereal is permitted by Chi-Chi on the condition that he is paid in Sky-Gold, which brings her great satisfaction in his acceptance of the "job."
Goku's Intent Doesn't Always Matter
Despite Goku's past mistakes of disregarding Chi-Chi's feelings in Dragon Ball, it is undeniable that he has gone to great lengths to keep his promise with her. Some may argue that Goku's decision not to include Gohan in the Tournament of Power was due to his lack of belief in his son's warrior abilities. However, this is inconsequential as Goku ultimately did not break his promise to Chi-Chi. Dragon Ball Super can be streamed on Viz.com.
