In celebration of the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Pope's Exorcist on June 13, Russell Crowe fiercely defends his methods in a new clip from the film. Based on the true stories recounted in An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, the movie follows the life of Father Gabriele Amorth, a renowned and controversial exorcist for the Diocese of Rome. Crowe portrays Amorth in the late 1980s as he delves into a dark secret at an old Spanish abbey while investigating the possession of a young boy. To mark the release of the film on home media, Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from The Pope's Exorcist.
Will The Pope's Exorcist 2 Happen?
In the video above, Crowe's priestly character defends his unconventional techniques to a Vatican committee. Despite being questioned, he stands his ground and asserts that he is accountable only to one authority - The Pope.
The Pope's Exorcist, directed by Julius Avery of Overlord fame, was a moderate success upon its release. While some critics were not impressed with its standard approach to the genre, the movie still managed to rake in an impressive $72.8 million in box office revenue against an $18 million production budget. The film's commercial success and critical reception have raised questions about the possibility of a sequel being given the green light by Sony.
Despite a drop to seventh place at the box office in its second week of release, The Pope's Exorcist still managed to bring in a solid haul. This success could justify the studio moving forward with another installment, especially considering the multiple sequel setups featured in the film. These setups included the possibility of Crowe's Amorth clearing out hundreds of other sites dominated by kings of Hell, as well as the potential adaptation of multiple books written by the real priest. As Warner Bros' Conjuring franchise approaches its potential end with The Conjuring 4, Sony may see an opportunity to fill the horror franchise void with The Pope's Exorcist and keep the brand going with spinoffs. While no official announcements have been made by the actor or Sony regarding a sequel, a report did indicate that the studio was already in early development less than two weeks after its debut.
The Pope's Exorcist is now on Digital and will be available on Blu-ray™ and DVD on June 13.
