Gladiator, winner of the 2001 Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Actor, etches its mark in cinema history. Grossing over $460 million worldwide at the box office, Mescal assumes a weighty responsibility, particularly in the wake of Ridley Scott's string of 11 years without a successful sequel. However, despite his involvement in this momentous production, Mescal is far from being a Hollywood neophyte. In 2020, he captivated audiences as Connell in Normal People, a Hulu miniseries adapted from Sally Rooney's acclaimed novel of the same title.

Connie Nielsen is confirmed to reprise her role as Lucilla, the older sister of Commodus and former love interest of Maximus, in Gladiator 2. Joining the cast is Joseph Quinn from Stranger Things, who will portray Emperor Caracalla, known for his cruel and violent nature. Denzel Washington's involvement in the film has been confirmed, although his character has yet to be revealed.

Due to the immense success of the original film, there is much excitement surrounding Gladiator 2. Originally set for release on November 22, 2024, the ongoing strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA have caused delays in production. As a result, the projected release date may need to be postponed.
