In 2014, the first adaptation of The Last of Us was announced by Screen Gems, the studio responsible for the Resident Evil movies and many other horror films. The plan was for the adaptation to be a movie, but it never materialized. Instead, it became a TV show on HBO, which quickly became known for its excellent storytelling.
HBO's The Last of Us has been named Our Website's TV show of the year for 2023. Not only did it set a new standard for live-action adaptations of video games, but it also expanded the world and introduced us to compelling new versions of Joel and Ellie, capturing our hearts in the process.
Portrayed with impeccable skill by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the new incarnations of Ellie and Joel form an emotionally compelling pair. The show also introduces greatly expanded characters such as Bill, Frank, Sam, Henry, and Riley, adding to the incredible character work in the series.

Episode 3 is one of the best episodes of television in recent years, standing out for its beautiful exploration of the relationship between Bill and Frank from the game. The show turned the notes and scraps of paper into a touching, tender storyline that stands out in modern TV. In the bleak world of The Last of Us, it was heartwarming to see their love story thrive amidst the apocalypse. The two characters found solace in their home, creating a comforting oasis in the midst of the chaos.
The Last of Us isn't just our show of the year because of one episode. It's a series that appeals to both fans of the game and newcomers, expertly dropping viewers into a horrifying situation from the start and faithfully recreating the original game while adding in unexpected twists and turns.
We are unsure of what to expect in the future. Will Season 2 jump right into the second game, or will it explore the stories that happened between the two games? Regardless, we hope to be as captivated as we were by Season 1.
