Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana underwent knee surgery after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament. The club released a statement indicating that Fofana, aged 22, was unable to join the team's pre-season tour in America due to the need for specialized medical assessments. These assessments ultimately confirmed the necessity for an operation.
Wesley will now commence his recovery process and collaborate with Cobham's medical department while undergoing rehabilitation. Fofana has faced multiple injury setbacks previously, including a leg fracture sustained during a friendly match for his previous team, Leicester, two years ago.
The France international resumed playing in March 2022, followed by his transfer to Chelsea for £75m later that summer. However, during his debut season with the Blues, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for more than two months and persistently troubled him upon his return to training.
Chelsea will likely have to delve into the transfer market due to this setback, as it leaves them lacking defensive options for a significant portion of the upcoming campaign. Among the choices available to Mauricio Pochettino are Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah, and Benoit Badiashile, who is currently recuperating from a hamstring injury suffered last season.
