The indie adventure game Somerville will be released on PS4 and PS5 this month, marking its transition from being exclusively available on Xbox for nearly a year. Offering a unique third-person adventure experience, players will navigate through a city during an invasion by extraterrestrial beings. Developed by the indie studio Jumpship, which was co-founded by Dino Patti, known for his contributions to indie hits like Limbo and Inside, Somerville first made its debut announcement in 2021. At that time, it was revealed to be a day one Game Pass game for PC and Xbox. Remarkably, less than a year has passed since its launch in November 2022, and the game's exclusivity to consoles is now coming to an end.
Starting on August 31, PlayStation users will have the opportunity to play Somerville on both PS4 and PS5. Jumpship recently announced this exciting news on Twitter, accompanied by a captivating video showcasing some gameplay moments from Somerville. Regrettably, there are no current plans for a release on the Nintendo Switch. However, Jumpship reassured fans in the comments section that any change in this situation would be promptly announced.
For PlayStation gamers who choose to embark on the Somerville journey, they will find themselves immersed in the captivating tale of a regular family's father, who unexpectedly faces adversity amidst a global alien invasion. Drawing inspiration from the critically acclaimed game Inside, Somerville offers players a third-person experience filled with physics-based puzzles and elements of platforming. Despite its relatively short duration, with most players completing it in under four hours, Somerville is still a worthwhile endeavor. Fans of indie games like Limbo, Another World, and Everybody's Gone To The Rapture will especially appreciate Somerville's intriguing story, mysterious atmosphere, and unique alien encounters.
This is not the first time that an Xbox console exclusive is announced for PlayStation, and it likely won't be the last. Recently, Xbox stated that The Outer Worlds 2 may also be released for PlayStation consoles, even though it is being developed by Obsidian, a studio owned by Microsoft. Microsoft acknowledges that the first game in the franchise was a PlayStation title, so it would make sense to release the sequel on that platform to cater to its existing community. However, PlayStation gamers will have to wait for several months or possibly years to find out if The Outer Worlds 2 will truly be available for PS5.
Somerville is currently available for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. It will be launching for PS4 and PS5 on August 31.
