The Many Endings And Returns Of Futurama, And How They Concluded Each Finale
We were fortunate enough to produce 52 episodes for Comedy Central, an incredible opportunity. Nowadays, it's no longer guaranteed that you'll have the chance to end a show on your own terms. Because of this, our writers have become extremely mindful of always creating a season finale, never assuming anything. This mindset still holds true today. While we are currently working on these 20 episodes with high hopes and optimism for more, we also understand that each season has the potential to be its last, sadly.Renewals and cancellations have made Futurama's history quite complicated, with the series undergoing format changes and switching channels over time. Originally airing on Fox, the show faced multiple reschedulings that made its release confusing. Unfortunately, it was ultimately canceled after its fourth season in 2003, leaving viewers hanging on a poignant moment between Fry (Billy West) and Leala (Katey Sagal) in "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings." However, the show's strong fanbase, as evident through successful syndication on Adult Swim and Comedy Central, showed that there was still support for the series. This paved the way for a second chance.
Comedy Central, impressed by the show's performance, commissioned four feature-length direct-to-video movies entitled "Bender's Big Score", "The Beast With A Billion Backs", "Bender's Game", and "Into the Wild Green Yonder". These films were released between 2007 and 2009 and were also written to be later divided and broadcasted on the network as 26 individual episodes, each with its own finale. The success of these movies led to Comedy Central reviving the series for two more seasons from 2010 to 2013. The series concluded once again in September 2013 with the heartwarming story of Fry and Leela in "Meanwhile".
Due to its history of cancellation and revival, Futurama's crew has often been aware of the uncertainty surrounding the show's longevity. With season 11, the team, led by Katz, aims to ensure a satisfying conclusion. However, many viewers may also be excited to see Planet Express embark on future adventures in additional seasons. As season 11's finale approaches, fans might be wondering if it will deliver another significant milestone in Fry and Leela's relationship, similar to past finales.
